Is it me, or does Grisham not seem excited?
I know he is one half of the Slammy-winning duo, but I have been disappointed with Grish recently.
He just never seems excited to be calling the action. Two big examples that jump out at me are Christian's return/re-debut last month and Evan Bourne's return last night. For both of these, he seemed to phone in the calls and I feel like that took something away from the moment. Also, the way he's been calling matches has been mediocre at best in my opinion. Sure he has his excited moments, usually yelling about Finlay, but they seem few and far between. I like Grisham, but he doesn't seem to fit the play-by-play role too well. He needs to get more excited about what's happening in front of him, or at least act like he's excited. Discuss. |
He's play-by-play. Let the color man get excited. I think that's part of the dynamic.

J.R. may have you think differently, though.

Maybe he's saving his excitement for when something HUGE happens on ECW.

I think they've pretty much changed the dynamics of how they do commentary. Back when they would use guys like Macho Man, Raven, Perfect, Heenan, Johnny Polo, Ventura, etc, they would be there for color and guys like Gorilla, Vince, JR, Alfred Hayes, would be there for play by play.
I think it started with JBL, but he would add to his color what it was like to be in there with a guy in addition to calling some moves. Tazz does that from time to time, and will sometimes call moves. Striker seems to call moves pretty often. I like this wrestler's perspective, but then it also turns the real play by play guy into a guy who gets caught up in yelling about the match rather emotionally rather than calling it. The two shouldn't be mutually exclusive. |
Still don't like Grisham. JOSH FUCKING MATTHEWS
NOW He's like the only reason I watched Velocity. Him and Miller/DeMott were awesome. |
I agree with you. I think Josh Matthews should be doing the play by play for ECW. I like Grisham as the backstage guy for Raw. You could use him for the backstage guy on all three shows. Also, Grisham could be used for the new show on WGN.
He did blow it when Christian came back and a little when Bourne came back too. Striker saved him both times. Quote:
Yes, JR has changed what play-by-play guys are in getting excited, but he probably got that from the MLB, NBA, NFL etc. where the play-by-play guy gets excited during the games. JR probably wanted to move that to the matches. |
I'd rather see someone down play the emotion than this.

The ECW commentating works quite well, I was quite impressed by it.

I was misquoted in post 13 of this thread.

No, that's really what you said...or at least what you meant...isn't it?

I like the balance Grish and Striker have.
