The Class

Incredible movie.

I THINK The Mask posted about this a while ago actually, but yeah, just saw this today. Great. Like I have no idea how the director got the acting to be so "real" but it feels like it's a documentary or something, except it isn't. It was blowing my mind though how good the acting was. I guess it was probably improvised, but it was done so well by young "real kids".

It won the Palm D'Or at Cannes and got nominated for Best Foreign Film at the Academy Awards this year.

Been really hating "artsy foreign films" lately b/c so many of them are pretentious shit that pisses me off, but this movie is not at all.

Just throwing this out there. Anyone else seen it?

I've seen it, I thought it was pretty good but a little long for what it was. I was checking my watch alot during it. As it says on the imdb page, it based on a book written by the lead guy based on his real experiences as a teacher and the dialogue was mainly improvised with loads of stuff shot with the kids over a year and the best of it put together for the film.

I just felt it was a little pointless other than showing what goes on in a multicultural school in France. Interesting enough but a little tiring after a while.

Yeah that is a pretty good assessment actually. It was a bit "pointless" but still real entertaining to watch for me.

Word @ shooting tons of improvised stuff over a year. Makes sense.

Well its French so you'll struggle..I really hope your not looking for a dubbed version just read the damn subtitles.

Triple A 03-27-2009 07:24 AM

Yeah it is French. Download subtitles: http://www.subtitles-divx.net/d/239933/The+Class.html

Just name the subtitles file the same name as the video and it should work.

The Mask 03-27-2009 08:56 AM

nah i don't think i've seen this one. perhaps you're thinking of die welle: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1063669/

you should see that too, btw. kind of obvious but good all the same.

RoXer 03-27-2009 08:57 AM

Yeah I knew it was french but I dunno. I guess I thought you saw a different version or something because you said it was "well acted".

Like how can you tell someone is acting "real" when they're speaking a language you don't understand? So I assumed he saw a different version I dunno.

But yeah I will check it out. Probly watch it in a few hours.

It was definitely entertaining, the kids were excellent as you say and the dialogue was brilliant (probably because it was "real"). Personally I just found two hours of almost constant chattering to be a bit tiring, with the only real narrative being Souleymane and how to deal with him.

The showing I went to see had this Canadian dickhead do a talk before the film too which made me feel like a pretentious wanker, I felt embarassed just sitting there. She was going on and on using French words for things and all these old bastards were laughing at her shit jokes, you know that really loud laugh people do to show how they get a witty, intelligent joke. But she did talk about the bit in the film where he calls the girls "skanks," apparently the word has another old-fashioned meaning but it's used by young people to mean "skanks" now and they didn't really go into this in the film, about why the teacher thought it was ok to use the word, and how non-French people probably wouldn't pick up on that misunderstanding.
