I cannot wait to get this game. Also,

Punch Out Wii Supports Balance Board

…And we support Punch Out Wii. Man, there is quite a bit of media lately for this title and I am starting to salivate.
Players will be able to use the Wii Balance Board in conjunction with the Wii Remote and Nunchuck to throw punches and dodge and weave at the same time.

Get your gloves on and return to the ring – Punch-Out!! is making a comeback! Originally a hit on the Nintendo Entertainment System back when boxers still fought for 15 rounds, the newest installment in the series comes out swinging on Wii.

An intuitive control scheme takes you closer to the action in the ring than ever before! Unleash hooks, uppercuts and Star Punches by swinging the Wii Remote and Nunchuk, or flip your controller sideways to enjoy the classic NES control scheme.

As big-hearted Bronx brawler Little Mac, you’ll have to launch a one-man assault on the boxing world as you bid to become undisputed champ of the Minor, Major and World ranking organisations. Along the way you’ll lock horns with the likes of Glass Joe, Don Flamenco and the hard-hitting King Hippo. A total of 13 flamboyant fighters stand in your path, every one with a creative new way of trying to make sure you end up face-down on the canvas.

Thankfully, Little Mac can fight back. Armed with the Wii Remote and Nunchuk, punching is a simple case of taking a swing at your opponent whilst holding different combinations of buttons. Soften them up with jabs by pressing up on the Nunchuk Control Stick when you punch, or crash home a super-charged Star Punch by holding the C or A Buttons as you let your hands go.

Of course, if you intend to master the sweet science you’ll have to learn how to hit and not get hit. Punch-Out!! calls on you to keep a close eye on your opponents and learn their attack patterns – hopefully leaving them swiping at fresh air and open to a crashing counter. If it all sounds like a lot to remember when the leather starts flying, you’ll be glad to know the game features a helpful tutorial mode to make sure you get to grips with the basics before you climb through the ropes.

Ultimately, you’ll no doubt want to make sure you’re rightfully recognised as the pound-for-pound king of the ring. Punch-Out!! includes a multiplayer mode that lets you and a friend slug it out to the bitter end. As in the single player mode, you’ll want to land punches at the right moment to build up Star Punch points that translate into almighty haymakers! Landing and dodging blows in Head-to-Head mode also builds up a Giga Mac gauge. Once full, your fighter is ready to inflict some serious damage.

Have you always thought you could have been a contender? Then get ready to rumble in the all-action Punch Out!! for Wii.

* Fight it out in Career and Exhibition modes or challenge a friend in Head-to-Head mode.
* Play using the Wii Remote and Nunchuk for a hard-hitting and immersive experience!
* Go retro by holding the Wii Remote sideways like a NES controller and pounding home punches with a simple press of the 1 and 2 Buttons.

The legendary Punch-Out!! is back with a vengeance on Wii, but this time it packs an even bigger punch! Featuring all of the well-known characters from Glass Joe to Von Kaiser, superb duck and weave action, and the addition of enhanced functionality for Wii, the game returns for another assault on Europe on 22 May 2009.

After a flawless fight record on the NES and Super NES, Punch-Out!! revives the story of Little Mac as you follow his journey from up-and-coming boxer in the Bronx, NY to undisputed World champion. The game reunites the much-loved mean men of the World Video Boxing Association, who Little Mac must challenge and defeat one-by-one. The truly international line-up of characters includes all the wacky favourites from Von Kaiser, to King Hippo and tireless trainer Doc Louis.

The game brings the tactics and skills of boxing to Wii as you spot weaknesses in your opponent’s armoury – such as changes in their body position – and exploit them with your best upper cuts, hooks and jabs. However, this time the game packs even more power with bold new 3D graphics and the introduction of the motion sensing controls of the Wii Remote and Nunchuk to give a more instinctive boxing experience as you weave, bob and duck your way to the top!

Punch-Out!! on Wii offers great new control opportunities, utilising both the Wii Remote and Nunchuk to let you mimic the movements of the left and right hands as you let the leather fly. Meanwhile, the “classic” control system, invites you to use the Wii Remote in a sideways position to simulate the original NES controller and gives the real retro fight feel that Punch-Out!! fans love.

Punch-Out!! Will certainly bring the thrills of the big ring to Wii and will give you the chance to experience fight night in the comfort of your own living room. It’s seconds out and time for round one!

GDC09: Punch-Out!! Wii hands-on

by Kevin Kelly { Mar 29th 2009 at 8:30PM }
<!-- sphereit start --> Little Mac is definitely back, and he brought Doc Louis with him. He's also hauling a heck of a lot more pixels this time around, and we're happy to report that Punch-Out!! is indeed still fun to play. The Nintendo booth (the largest and lone major gaming publisher on the show floor) was showing off Punch-Out!! on a few stations, although sadly without the Balance Board functionality that's coming to the game.

It did show off four of the thirteen total fighters, including Glass Joe, Von Kaiser, King Hippo, and the newcomer, Disco Kid. He looks like what you'd get if you crossed Mike Tyson with Ric Flair, and pulled him through a Disney movie animation wringer. He likes to primp, check himself out in a mirror, and pose for the crowd. Little Mac learned the lesson about the dangers of vanity long ago, so there's no such worry. Head after the break and start training, Punch-Out!! comes out on the Wii this May.

You're probably wondering if the game feels a lot like Wii Boxing, and that's going to be an obvious comparison for everyone. There's no way around this, because you're throwing your arms out and simulating punches. It'll be that way for any boxing game on the Wii, for all eternity. After about 10 minutes of gameplay, my arms were throbbing, and I felt like I'd just done 30 minutes of Tae-bo. While it's not a bad idea if you're a gamer looking for a workout, an hour or more of this in a row is going to leave you unable to lift a pencil the next day.

Little Mac has a lot more options to punch, dodge, duck, shoot body blows or uppercuts, and he also has special Star Punches. To get a Star you have to hit an opponent in a certain way, with Disco Kid it's after one of his posed punches. Dodge it, wham him, and you've got a star in your meter. Once you've collected one, you can hit the A button while swinging to unleash a devastating punch. Just like in the NES version, you'll lose a star if you get punched.

You can use the Wiimote in Classic Control mode to emulate the old NES controls, or hook up your Nunchuck and go for the whole Motion Control experience. Flick the thumbstick on the nunchuck to the right or left and you'll dodge, pull it down to duck, and push it up to punch your opponent in the face. While the Motion Control version feels fun briefly (and using the Balance Board to dodge punches should be fun... also for about 30 minutes), the classic mode really feels like the Punch-Out!! we know and love.

Nintendo's added in a lot of damage graphics to the opponents that stack up over time: hit them with a lot of body blows, and their midsection will start to turn red and bruise, punch 'em in the face a lot and you'll see black eyes and welts. I mean, just check out the lump on Von Kaiser's face in that main image. It looks like he's a teenager who just hit puberty. The cel-shaded graphics look shiny-cool, the characters move like they're straight out of an anime and it's weird to see these guys not in 8-bit graphics. It would've been nice to see Nintendo offer up a slew of new boxers, while making the old guys unlockable, but hey, it's Punch-Out!!, and it's back. Ding ding ding!

LuigiD 03-29-2009 11:05 PM

hmm..I guess they changed little Mac's appearance?
The game looks bad ass tho. I had the Super Nintendo one. Never beat it though. I always got to the last circuit. The second guy was some Asian fucker who used a stick. I remember me and my friends use to flip shit and yell "WHAT THE FUCK HE IS USING A WEAPON!!"
good times..

LuigiD 03-29-2009 11:07 PM

I just read..thirteen total fighters?
that kinda sucks..

Funky Fly 03-29-2009 11:40 PM

Wouldn't be a Wii game without at least a little disappointment.

I am not even like punch out nerd guy or anything, but this still angers me for some reason.

Funky Fly 03-30-2009 03:05 AM

I guess that's why he looks like he does in Smash Bros Brawl. He is the Wii version.

Not totally. Yea, the lack of fighters is a little annoying, but in the Punch Out for the NES you fought Bald Ball, Piston Honda, and the guy who ate the rose (Don Flamingo?) more than once. They could do that again, or do what Punch Out for the SNES did with the last guy and fight his twin (albeit I'd rather see these two guys a few people apart, or just make it an angry older brother).
I don't own a Wii, but if it's like a 360 then there could be DLC for it that gives you more fighters. Who knows? Maybe you'll be able to box your buddy online?
This game has potential. Hell, put it on the Wii Fit board and make footwork part of the game.

I wouldn't say it sucks just yet.... Then again I'm glued Bionic Comando: Rearmed right now and couldn't give a fuck about the Wii unless they came out with another Smash Bros game with the guy from Bionic Comando in the game.

Funky Fly 03-30-2009 04:02 AM

Wii doesn't do game add-ons or good online play.

OssMan 03-30-2009 07:25 AM

What do you mean they changed little mac's appearance what? Yeah he looks different because the last game he was in is 20 years old

Fignuts 03-30-2009 10:00 AM

Guys, stop fueling my silent rage.

It's not a big deal but now he looks more like a Hispanic? unless my eyes were fucked up before and I could not tell. Not a big deal really..just wondering why they pulled it off. I remember someone bitching a while back that Nintendo is not multicultural enough.

OssMan 03-30-2009 11:32 AM

He was 8 bit the last time he was in a game. Black people and Asian people looked hispanic in 8 bit

I guess his eyebrows are less rounded and his eyes are more than black dots? Does this really matter?

Super Punch Out is now on the Virtual Console. I never got into it, just seemed too different than the first.

Dave Youell 05-04-2009 05:26 PM

Just for clarification, it's not just 13 fighters

Once you win the title, you have to defend it against all the roster again, only this time they are much harder, the review I read said they lost the title to Glass Joe!

Plus there's loads of mini challenges. Like knock a guy out without blocking etc
