Guys who made shitty gimmicks good
 

One of the characteristics of the wrestling world that you'll find anywhere you go is the ability to come up with some of the stupidest fucking characters you could possibly imagine, and then wrestlers are supposed to make these characters look good. More often than not, these shitty gimmicks fail. And it's nothing against those wrestlers, because even guys with an enormous amount of charisma and talent like Kevin Nash can falter with a shitty gimmick.

But every so often, a wrestler gets a shitty gimmick, runs with it, and makes that character work. For whatever reason, something clicks and the fans buy into it. So let's take time to remember the people who were able to make that happen.

I was thinking about doing a write up for each one but I'm too lazy now so I'll just list them. Maybe I'll come back and do a write up later.

Screamin Norman Smiley (and the Wiggle)

Ricky the Dragon Steamboat (stereotype gimmicks have always been prevalent and even good wrestlers like Tito Santana can't make them work, but Ricky made it work so well that we don't even think about it as a gimmick anymore)

That said, Simon Dean was great. I remember how he used to come out and insult the fatties in the audience and then tell the cameras to put a fat guy up on the tron, and one time he made this one dude cry and look so ashamed of himself. I bet he went home and ate himself to death.

That will always be a shitty gimmick, if for no other reason than because of Michael Cole talking about how much of a man Vito was because they hung out at bars together.

Naked Mideon. He was shit anyway, so playing naked total shit must have come natural.

Yeah, this is pretty much the ultimate answer. He's manage to stay paranormal for 80% of his career and make it work perfectly.

When it's all said and done, he's just a western undertaker who shoots lightning out of his hands.

I immediately thought 'Goldust' with this one. John Cena had a ton of success with his white-boy-can-rap gimmick for a while when he burst onto the scene too.

Otherwise current characters and gimmicks are either too bland or excessively freaky-outy to really provide any other quality answers to this question.
