Why does everyone "sweat" Ricky the Dragon Steamboat

Maybe he was really good "before my time" but as a kid, I never remember liking him at all. I never remember him even doing anything noteworthy other than spitting fire. He was just a midcard wrestler as far as I remember.

So why does everyone act like he is the best wrestler ever? I feel like I def missed something and he was good in like 1985 or something when I was 2 years old before I liked wrestling.

Or is he just a wrestler that people pretend to like because that is what other "smarts" say and they also want to seem like they are a "smart" who "appreciates good wrestling skills even when they were watching him when they were like 4 years old".

Nark Order 04-18-2009 03:55 AM

We, he had like the best match in the history of ever with Savage for starters.

Triple A 04-18-2009 04:00 AM

Boring ass promo. No wonder I never liked him.

Triple A 04-18-2009 04:02 AM

Pretty good theme. Kinda making me pumped up to actually watch this match. I thought his theme was the Chicago Bulls theme though for some reason.

mike adamle 04-18-2009 05:21 AM

someone with over 66,000 posts saying steamboat's overrated? something isn't right here

sulzerdrone 04-18-2009 05:21 AM

In a time when Hulkamania was running wild, and the whole wrestling universe revolved around that, Steamboat was a true standout in the ring. Sure his mic work wasn't the greatest, but between bells there were few that could deliver the way he could. If it weren't for Hogan being the centre of the universe at the time, Steamboat would have probably had a much bigger run in the WWF. I was young, but I remember him being a favourite.

mike adamle 04-18-2009 05:24 AM

btw, on an unrelated note, they should totally bring back those mini rings wrestlers had to ride down the ring in on wrestlemania, at least with the last few mania's since they've had to walk like half a football field

I believe those were for Andre, because, well, he couldn't walk that far. I could be wrong though.

GD 04-18-2009 06:55 AM

AAA is back in the wrestling forums.

GD 04-18-2009 06:56 AM

Rick Steamboat is great BTW.

Hanso Amore 04-18-2009 09:11 AM

Were you an NWA fan? because if you are basing this on his WWE tenure, Dont.

He has a good run going in and out of WM3, but for the most part the WWE wasted him.

He was the single hottest thing in the NWA in the late 80s.

His matches with flair were epic at the time.

Executioner 04-18-2009 09:15 AM

IMO, Steamboat's best matches came with Flair at Wrestle War 89, Chi-Town Rumble 89 and Clash of the Champions VI: Ragin Cajun.

Triple Naitch 04-18-2009 09:35 AM

He spits hot fire.

James Steele 04-18-2009 10:03 AM

Triple A is a yankee, and I imagine he wonders why people would "sweat" Ric Flair before 1992.

Theo Dious 04-18-2009 10:17 AM

Steamboat was one of the guys who were the steak behind the sizzle in his time.

Destor 04-18-2009 10:37 AM

Yeah, Steamboat is amazing. The stuff he did for NWA was TOP notch.

Innovator 04-18-2009 10:39 AM

If you take a Steamboat armdrag, all your diseases are cured

Triple A 04-18-2009 10:47 AM

This thread makes me kinda wish I was able to watch an untelevised wrestling promotion in the 1980s when I was 5 years old so I could appreciate Steamboat now.

Smarky The Shark 04-18-2009 10:48 AM

NWA was ok, but it had nothing on Japan at the time.

Destor 04-18-2009 10:48 AM

You can find tons of Steamboat outside of the WWF on the net right now if you weren't so lazy.

You might be fishing right here, but really. NA rarely has anything on Japan.

Innovator 04-18-2009 10:50 AM

Stan Hansen LARIAT

You pick him out of all the amazing talents in Japan? Minoru Fujita ring a bell? You are a poser sir, and that is pathetic.

Stealth-Icon 04-18-2009 10:57 AM

Steamboat was one of may favorites when I was a kid. I remember when Macho "crushed" Ricky's throat with the ring bell and thinking this stuff was real back then. It was horrible, i think that I may have cried.

Smarky The Shark 04-18-2009 10:58 AM

You are a stupid mark. How many John Cena shirts do you have?

Hanso Amore 04-18-2009 11:05 AM

STeamboat was Pippen to Flairs Jordan.

One of the best ever, but overshadowed by the best, but greatness couldnt have been the same without him..

They had some great TV. You are in NY right? Well I had no trouble watching the SUperstation for the late 80s.

I was able to get many tapes back then too though.

Destor 04-18-2009 11:08 AM

Yeah, Trips is off his rocker

Ol Dirty Dastard 04-18-2009 11:27 AM

His stuff in NWA is awesome. I recently started watching his matches, he literally always had the crowd wrapped around his finger, they'd live and die by him and everything he did. And he was a threat to anyone but could also lose to anyone. He was one of those guys.

and his chops were awesome.

Gerard 04-18-2009 11:27 AM

The "bulls theme" is called Project sirius-eye in the sky which steamboat used for a while, before that gay oriental theme wwe gave him, that shit may as well say "ching chang chong" its so stereotypical sounding.
