was nu-metal the most retrospectively regrettable genre since the 80s?
i mean seriously the 80s had your cock rock and a bunch of synth/drum machine/epic reverb on your snare type songs that have dated horribly in the process, and have become quite laughable since. now it seems everyone is looking back at nu-metal and sighing a collective "what the fuck were we thinking?"
it also seems to have dropped off the face of the earth as a popular genre this past few years, and i think the only band to come out of that era with any respect still intact would be deftones, since they were a bit more musical and different to your korns and limpbizkits etc in that their lyrics were a little bit more subtle than a brick to the face, unlike every other nu-metal band whose defining trait would be to make lyrics laughably blunt. plus it is the genre that gave us fred durst. |
Now who'll admit to actually liking it at the time? Anyone?
It certainly did produce some absolutely horrible bands who really didn't deserve the spotlight. Give it 30 years and everyone will be looking back on it as the greatest musical genre of our time. :( |
I think that faggy dance music shit is worse than nu-metal. (Hi Gertie!)
|
Detones aren't nu-metal surely
|
I love me some 80s Hard Rock. The only musical genres I can`t stand are nu-metal, techno, and punk. To quote Ozzy - ''It`s like kicks straight to your brain''.
|
I dont think that way, sure Limp Bizcut bacame laughable but when they first came out everyone loved them, and how could you pan earlier Korn?

i enjoyed a wide variety of nu-metal at the beginning of its popularity
i most definitely regret that decision. nah, not really, but i certainly don't listen to it nowadays for anything more than a life. |

Says a guy with Superfreak as his avatar. Seriously though, I don`t give a shit whether you like it or not, it`s my choice of music that I don`t care if you agree with. I used to listen to Black Metal when I was like 14 so by all measures it`s a step forward. |
Techno > you

lol wide variety of nu-metal
what was i thinking when i picked those words |

Deftones have any respect? Meh...
I was never a fan of nu metal itself (at that time I was into Metallica, Megadeth and just starting my journey into progressive rock/metal) but I did like one or two songs from bands. |
Nu metal only seems to be associated with sports these days. Promo vids, highlight reels, ufc intros and WWE in general are all about the nu-metal still.
|
Deftones kick ass. I would not sully them with the label, "Nu metal."
Anyways, i think Soulfly were labelled nu-metal and they brought, and still bring, the shit. |
Are Linkin Park still considered Nu Metal? I remember when they came out they were all metal etc and people loved 'em, but now they seem like some boy band.
|
I like(d) nu-metal.. But I liked it before it became popular, like original hardcore.. Biohazard, Anthrax, etc..
I still listen to metal/hip hip shit so the genre still interests me.. |

Also I would say Disco was one of the most regrettable genres. There has never been a numetal demolition night.

Not gonna lie, I loved a lot of the nu-metal bands.
I'll still throw on the Bizkit when I'm playing beer pong or whatnot. |
Why would I admit to that? :nono:
|
Linkin Park remains one of my favourite bands.
|
the only thing I have to say here is how much I love Deftones
|
I still have love for Korn. Slipknot too.
would System of a Down be considered Nu? If so, then they are unquestionably the best band to be of a product of Nu-Metal. |

Don't regard Deftones or SOAD as Nu-Metal though, they both rock. |

C`mon , Anthrax ain`t no nu-metal. |
i sort of liked korn up until after issues. issues was like 40% good and the first album was nearly all good and the second was pretty shit apart from good god. third one was ok but a little too not metal for the most part. i brought them up cause the lyrical content had no subtlety, not because i think they were utter gash.
straight after issues everything they did was an utter fucking turd burger though. |
also i think system and deftones are bands that are unfairly lumped in there, but they were from around that era and they aren't straight ahead metal so they're close enough to fit.

I liked Limp Bizkit's first 2 albums. Still do. Love Counterfit.

As for SOAD, they were Nu-Metal at one point, and have one of the two standard bands that link them to the genre (in their case Mr. Bungle, the other being Faith No More). I would say they're more along the lines of Progressive Metal/Rock at this point. Mudvayne was lame until they wiped the clown makeup off of their face and went straight Hard-Rock. Hell Yeah! has better guitars, though. Honestly, I liked some Nu-Metal at the time (early Korn, Shuvel, Primer 55, Reveille, first LB album, would Machine Head count?), but I pretty much grew out of the faze. I enjoy the cheesiness of Hair Metal now. But I prefer Southern Metal, Melodic Death Metal, and some Power Metal (but not Dragon Force, aka the band that masturbates with their guitar.) |
I really would need a more clear definition of nu-metal before I could call it the most regrettable genre since the 80's. Either way, I like a lot of the bands mentioned in this thread. If you were my age when Limp Bizkit and Korn first came on the scene, chances are you thought they were amazing. Granted, I was in the seventh grade or so. Also, Three Dollar Bill, Ya'll is a fantastic album, no matter how faggoty Fred Durst would later become.
There were also some bands like Nonpoint, Reveille, and Insolence who I really liked, but they weren't as popular as some of the aforementioned bands. Is it possible that just like pretty much every other genre, the mainstream stuff is the worst of it all? This thread in itself is sort of making me chuckle because it's like "nu metal was ridiculous, except for...." and then we're rattling off more than a handful of decent bands. Then somebody else will be like "but that's not nu-metal" in an effort to justify their favorite bands. I don't think nu-metal is such a horrible label, considering. |

One of the first metal/rap mash-ups..
Which is exactly what "nu-metal" tried to be.. <object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/RBA-xi8WuCU&hl=en&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/RBA-xi8WuCU&hl=en&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object> |
I've seen Nonpoint five times live and met them twice. Awesome band, nice guys. "Bullet With a Name" is off of To the Pain which is pretty decent, but I prefer Statement and Development.
|
I havent heard those albums, im gonna check em out
