Where were you during the night of the Montreal Screwjob?

Looking back, the whole pay-per-view had a dark cloud over it. Even before the main event. It was a very depressing mood for the whole show. You just knew from watching that something bad was going to happen that night.

I wanted to order the PPV, but I had just turned 15, and my parents wouldn't order it for me because of money issues. Anyhow, I knew it was Bret Hart's last match in the World Wrestling Federation. This was before I even had Internet access. I only knew that because I called a wrestling hotline number I found on the back of a PWI magazine, that I later got in trouble for, for calling when the bill came in. lol.

I honestly felt like something bad was going to happen the night of the Survivor Series. I remember while the show was going on, I went by the back door of the house, sat down, & just watched the Texas rain. I wasn't sad about not getting to see the show. (That wasn't the first time my parents said "no" to ordering a WWF PPV.) I just sensed something bad was going to happen and I honestly had this weird feeling.

The more rational side of me says I felt that way because I knew Bret was leaving the WWF, and I was just depressed, and it was just a very bizarre consequence that Bret would get screwed.

Celebrating.

Anybody Thrilla 05-10-2009 01:31 PM

I always had PPV parties in my grandparent's basement. A group of about 8-10 of us would watch every show every month and split the cost. I was watching it, and I was very confused as to what the hell was going on.

...until bret air-wrote WCW, I knew there was some shit going down and he was going to WCW or there was some sort of storyline coming.

We didn't have the internet in ma house until the following year, and that was still 50p per minute. lol. Oh, those days of being genuinely gripped and surprised by what was happening !

Rammsteinmad 05-10-2009 04:28 PM

I can't remember.

Did you really have to make the whole night of the PPV that dramatic and serious? It's just a wrestling PPV. You made it sound like 9/11 happening all over again.

Supreme Olajuwon 05-10-2009 05:51 PM

It was the equivalent of 9/11 for Canadians.

thedamndest 05-10-2009 05:54 PM

I was not actively watching wrestling then. I was probably playing Goldeneye.

Zeeboe 05-10-2009 06:10 PM

I honestly didn't think I was, Pull. I was just posting my exact thoughts and memories. I never consider it to be anything like 9/11.

Innovator 05-10-2009 06:16 PM

Probably homework

ClockShot 05-10-2009 06:17 PM

Sleeping probably.

FourFifty 05-10-2009 06:40 PM

I was wondering how Bret Hart could drag HBK down to such a shitty match. HBK could have a match with a sack of rocks and it would be exciting.

I was watching the PPV on TV

St. Jimmy 05-10-2009 06:42 PM

Watching it and marking out.

Theo Dious 05-10-2009 08:16 PM

I was in college at the time, turned down the chance to watch in the student union for reason's I've since forgotten (and hate myself for.) May have been sleeping, or else playing Mortal Kombat in the dorm. I remember finding out what happened the next night, being happy that Shawn was champion, and thinking the screwjob bit was a work to shift Bret out the door. Didn't know he was WCW-bound, and really the whole thing didn't get explained to me until a few years later.

Sovereigntywillpr 05-10-2009 08:38 PM

In OTTAWA TRYING TO FALL ASLEEP (TO BE AT THE RAW TAPING THE NEXT NiGHT) AND HEARD ABOUT IT ON THE RADIO AS I DIDN"T ORDER THE PPV, THE ONE I DIDN"T(NEED TO HOLD SHIFT FOR SOME REASON)

Xero 05-10-2009 08:39 PM

So Canada covered wrestling on the radio?

LOL

lol. I really don't think anyone in that ring knew how to sing the Canadian national anthem.

Zen v.W.o. 05-11-2009 10:41 AM

I was there. Sitting in the whites. Crowd was nuts, a few HBK fans got threatened and beat up, and at the time I was without the net and still clueless about the backstage going ons so I wasnt exactly sure what was up, but sorta realized that match just didnt end the way it was supposed to.

parkmania 05-11-2009 09:03 PM

I was watching at a friend's apartment with 6-7 other folks. We had no idea what was going on, and exchanged OMGs.

Given the behavior of their Canadian Hero himself on that very night, I'm not surprised to learn that Hart fans would use violence to make their point.

As much as I hate responding to bad trolls, given the situation, I'd say his actions were pretty justified.

ozzman6669 05-11-2009 10:07 PM

I was there, in the blues, I was 13 at the time so I didn't understood what was happenning at the time and after some threats coming from older guys I had no choice but to hide my HBK sign and shirt !!!

Hopefully that plane would have every fucking Hart member on it. That Way my death won't be in vein.

Krimzon7 05-11-2009 10:28 PM

but to answer the question...

Klimaxing.

It's a standing question I have. Bret Hart, who constantly goes on about what a good role model and hero for young Canadians he always was, chose to physically assault a man he had an issue with. Explain to me how that is not incongruent.

That's awesome. I pretty much hate/hated HBK fans, and especially hated seeing them in Canada. What's funny is I live in Texas, and I love The Hart Foundation. That whole angle in 97' made me ashamed to be a Texan because I was in Stone Cold/HBK country, and I hated being there during that whole storyline because I am that much of a mark for The Hart Foundation. I would have done ANYTHING to trade places with any Stone Cold Steve Austin or HBK fan who lived in Canada at the time. I'd gladly go to Canada, and give up Texas to them!

Anyhow, I honestly don't see how any decent human being could like Shawn Michaels over Bret Hart. I find HBK fans to be just as obnoxious, heartless (no pun intended) and immature as Shawn Michaels is, and I think you can tell a lot about a person in regards of wrestling as to rather they are an HBK fan or a Bret Hart fan. Most of all HBK fans fit the exact same description, so I'd never wanna be friends with someone who is an HBK fan because that's just asking for trouble.

If Shawn Michaels fans got their asses kicked that night, they probably said and/or did something to provoke it. They're most likely the same type of asshole's who mocked Owen's death. So yeah, when people like that get beat up, I wanna mark out. Cause they deserved it.

Bret Hart encouraged fans to stand up for themselves. Don't mistake kindness with weakness. Just because a guy tries to be a good role model and hero doesn't mean he should let people walk all over him.

DrA 05-13-2009 11:24 PM

I have no idea. I may be a loser but I am not that big of a loser to remember something like that.

Sixx 05-13-2009 11:30 PM

Asleep fo sho.

Loose Cannon 05-14-2009 12:22 AM

um, I was 14, it was a Sunday Night and I was not at the point where I was trying to watch scrambled PPV yet, so definately sleeping. My friend told me what happened the next day and I actually remember the exact moment that he told me. I just was confused and really pissed. Pissed at Bret losing the title.

Skippord 05-14-2009 03:49 PM

I was like 6 years old at the time

so I don't know

abec 05-14-2009 07:37 PM

RING DA BELL RING DA BELL
