"The Coach" John Tolos passes away

"The Golden Greek" and his brother Chris worked a number of territories as a tag team including the WWWF, NWA Detroit, Maple Leaf Wrestling, NWA Los Angeles, Stampede Wrestling and Championship Wrestling from Florida. They held several tag team championships throughout North America as heels.

Following his split from his brother, Tolos went on to become a top singles heel in Los Angeles and was considered one of the top talkers of the seventies.

Tolos may be best known for feuding with Fred Blassie in one of pro wrestling's all-time greatest feuds. He was chosen by Blassie to be his opponent in a match in 1971 at the Los Angeles Coliseum, which was one of the biggest events in wrestling of the time.

Tolos had a brief run in the World Wrestling Federation in 1991 as the manager of Intercontinental Champion "Mr. Perfect" Curt Hennig, replacing Bobby "The Brain" Heenan. Known as "The Coach," the character never really caught on, partially because Hennig took an extended leave of absence following SummerSlam after suffering a severe back injury. With Hennig indefinitely out of action, along with The Beverly Brothers changing their manager to "The Genius" Lanny Poffo, Tolos quietly disappeared from the World Wrestling Federation by the end of the year.

Tolos later worked for Herb
Abrams' Universal Wrestling Federation as an announcer and heel manager for "Cowboy" Bob Orton, Cactus Jack and The Power Twins.

Tolos' career in wrestling spanned three decades and he worked regularly into his 50s. He was known for his tremendous conditioning as he continued distance running well into his 60s. However, a near fatal stroke slowed him down in recent years.

The original Coach of course. Excuse the provocative thread title.

For a long time I always wondered who this random guy Coach was that accompanied Mr Perfect to the ring for probably his most famous match at SummerSlam '91. He wasn't around for very long (he also brought in the Beverly Brothers). Had no idea at the time that he was a legendary wrestler in his own right. R.I.P. "Golden Greek".

Wow....at least he led a full and compleat life.

May he find the light he couldn't find in this life

Edited because you are a retard.

I've been trying to learn more about Southern California and its wrestling history. There's not much compared to Texas, New York, Florida, etc, but you cannot talk about Southern California and wrestling history without talking about The Golden Greek John Tolos.

Rest in peace. :wavesad:

"Retard"?

I admittedly knew the guy only for his WWF managerial run. Now was his professional name during this time "The Coach" John Tolos, or was it Coach?

Yes, I believe it was Coach.

So when this guy, who I know as Coach, dies and I start a thread "Coach passes away", that doesn't make me a "retard".

If anyone here is stupid enough to read the title, not bother looking at the content and go about their day happily in the knowledge that Jonathan Coachman is no more, that's their own problem. Maybe they are the retard.

Xero 05-30-2009 06:01 PM

Did you just call Triple A retarded?

Clearly. I guess my point is.... who gives a shit?

Anybody Thrilla 05-30-2009 07:05 PM

RIP Coach. I'm sure he's obnoxiously blowing a whistle by Curt Hennig's side in heaven.

DrA 05-30-2009 07:31 PM

RIP The Coach John Tolos

I support the original titling of this thread.

AJHayes 06-01-2009 10:59 AM

Well, Blassie has someone to main event with again.

RIP Golden Greek
