Looking for a good war based strategy game

So recently I've been having the urge to play a war based strategy game. I have rarely played strategy games before so I have no clue on which are/would be good to get.

Anyone help?

C&C series are good, i also like the Age of Empires series. C&C is just the basic wars(tanks,rockets,nukes) and Age of Empires is like the how it was in the old days with Romans and stuff, bitch slapping each other with swords pretty cool IMO.

I agree, Red Alert is the man. Sucked many hours of my time back in the 90's. Plus Hell March is the coolest video game music ever.
