Windows 7 upgrades $50/$100? What? ***June 26th - July 11th***

Best Buy memo explains that Vista doesn't work, details Windows 7 upgrade plans

<!-- sphereit start --> Ouch. We're guessing this is one that the suits at Best Buy would like to have back. A leaked company memo detailing how the retailer will handle Windows 7 upgrades has accidentally given the world a tasty tidbit to opine upon. The note starts off as such:
"Microsoft is launching Windows 7 in mid-October 2009. This new operating system isn't just a "Vista that works" program - it's a new operating system with improved productivity, functionality and creativity that uses less computer resources."
Never mind the fact that we never knew an OS could posses "improved productivity" -- how about admitting that Vista, in effect, doesn't "work." Moving on, the note also makes clear that any PC sold with Vista Home Premium, Business or Ultimate between June 26th and the Windows 7 launch day (October 22nd) will be eligible for a free upgrade to Win7. Better still, the individual OSes also qualify for the update, and starting on June 26th, Best Buy will begin "pre-selling" the Windows 7 Home Premium Upgrade ($49.99) and the Windows 7 Professional Upgrade ($99.99). Have a look at the full letter below, and if you've come here for advice, here's the best we've got: don't buy a PC at Best Buy until June 26th.

$50 to upgrade? I'm all over that.

Not bad, I'll be buying it.

I still don't understand why people hate vista so much, it works fine for me :-\

Same for the most part. I've had a few compatibility issues, and I've heard it's a bitch for PC gaming, but other than it freezing the fuck out of my ipod from time to time, I'm pretty much good with it.

I think that too many people were trying to use it with low system specs, and bitching because of the problems that ensued, is what gave it a bad name. I think Requiem for a dream went through that phase.

Funky Fly 06-16-2009 04:56 AM

Well, I have seen XP run fairly smoothly on some really shit pcs. No way Vista could do the same.

Requiem 06-16-2009 05:14 AM

Yeah, Vista Ultimate x64 is fantastic from my experience. I am on Windows 7 now though and it is even better so whatever.

GD 06-16-2009 06:22 AM

I was expecting a Requiem Vista Ultimate x64 post.

bigdaddysuperfreak 06-16-2009 07:50 AM

I have had nothing but problems with Vista between the bsod and the compatibility issues. I am running a 2.3 quad core cpu with 4 gigs of memory so I doubt my comp cant handle it.

ct2k 06-16-2009 10:46 AM

Some places were selling Vista on PC's with half a gig of memory to be fair, fucking scandalous really.

What version are you on? are you on 32 bit or 64 bit?

Ultimate x64 has been a better experience than my entire many years of XP use.

Preorders start tomorrow, the 26th, and ends on July 11th. So far, I know of Best Buy, Amazon and Microsoft.com selling these. After July 11th, it's going up to $119.99 so make sure you do it in this time frame.

*Those prices are for the equivalent of Home Premium.

If you're planning to upgrade your current PC to Windows 7 when Microsoft releases their new OS, there's good and bad news for XP and Vista users. Here's a closer look at your upgrade options.

Upgrading from XP to Windows 7

Pros: According to tech site Ars Technica, XP users can purchase a cheaper "upgrade" version of Windows 7, despite XP's version gap. (Normally only users who purchased the latest OS get the cheaper upgrade option.)

Cons: Windows XP users will have no direct upgrade path. That means that in order to upgrade to Windows 7, you'll have to do a fresh installation of Windows 7 and manually migrate your files and apps to Win7—so you'll want to make sure to back up XP before upgrading or just dual boot XP and Windows 7.

Upgrading from Vista to Windows 7

Pros: Unlike XP, Vista users do get a direct upgrade path to Windows 7, so your files and apps should migrate to Win7 without any problems. (You should always backup before upgrading to be safe, and just to hedge your bets, you may also still want to dual boot Vista and Windows 7 rather than installing Windows 7 over Vista.) Vista users will also get the cheaper upgrade price.

Cons: It probably won't affect most users, but the Vista-to-Windows-7 upgrade paths are actually limited by version in the following ways:
o Windows Vista Home Premium to Windows 7 Home Premium
o Windows Vista Business to Windows 7 Professional
o Windows Vista Ultimate to Windows 7 Ultimate

If you don't follow one of those three upgrade paths, you'll have to perform a fresh install.

Just ordered my upgrade from Amazon, which included free release date delivery, all for $49.99. :y:

Bad Company 06-27-2009 06:27 AM

For ultimate?

Vietnamese Crippler 06-27-2009 06:31 AM

Gotta be Home Premium.

Bad Company 06-27-2009 07:10 AM

hmm, I might need to get someone from the states to buy an ultimate upgrade and send it over here for me. It's never gonna get that cheap in NZ.

Vietnamese Crippler 06-27-2009 07:35 AM

It's Home Premium: http://www.amazon.com/Microsoft-Wind...6102455&sr=8-1

Ultimate upgrade is 219.99

Bad Company 06-27-2009 08:23 AM

prob better off getting an OEM copy then.

#BROKEN Hasney 06-27-2009 10:14 AM

We've got it for £50/£100 and it's awesome, because our version is the full version and not the upgrade as well.
