June 19, 2009 - Hoping for another Teen rated Mortal Kombat game? Yeah, me neither. And it looks like the development team agrees.

Longtime series creator Ed Boon has made known new information regarding his upcoming title, tentatively being called Mortal Kombat 9.

"U r absolutely right. People want an M-rated MK....dammit we will give them an M-rated MK," he wrote in response to a reader on his twitter feed.

He also discussed a bit about how the game's new fatalities will look.

"Motion capturing special moves & fatalities today....they are kind of sick !!," he wrote. "

Carlos & Rick O. doin some kool fatalities. I hope we aren't taking these too far. :("

Boon also confirmed the game will no longer contain any super heroes, and that in no way would this be an AO rated game.

We reached out to Boon to comment and perhaps spill some more details, but he told IGN things will have to wait before new information about the game can be revealed. But at least this confirms the twitter account is actually Ed's and not some faker.

Yeah, whatever. MK is really getting played out. Especially now.

Soul Calibur 4
Battle Fantasia (only average, but slightly better than MK)
Street Fighter 4
Super Smash Bros Brawl
Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo: HD Remix (XBLA/PSN re-release)

In the next 5 months we're getting:

Tekken 6
BlazBlue
King of Fighters XII
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Smash Up
Garou: Mark of the Wolves (XBLA re-release)
Marvel vs Capcom 2 (XBLA re-release)

So, yeah. Not really looking forward to MK9 with all these other *cough*better*cough* games around.

I don't even trust Midway to make an MK game. These thoughts I already shared with you guys, but MK being an M Rated title does shit to entice me. I need to hear that an entirely different studio is working on it to get excited. Ed Boon and his cronies are fuckin lame - especially in light of this year's fighting game offerings. I would even release an MK game if I were them, the series' flaws will be more apparent than ever before.

Also: Mark of the Wolves drops this week. Caught me off guard.

Considering that God of War allowed you to do several hundred Fatalities in a single level, Mortal Kombat just kind of seems tame by comparison now.

MK vs DC was so terrible... So very, very terrible. =(

I think there's still life in the concept of finishing your opponent, they just don't know how to implement shit. I've sent Midway a hard-worded letter suggesting I head up the next Mortal Kombat.

Thank god for the M rating and no DC. With these fine changes to MK9 then fighting engine is secondary.

I never really thought of it that way but I guess you are right.
Over the years, I guess the "over the top" violence that Mortal Kombat provided has been beaten by other games that deliver it much better.
Mortal Kombat needs to focus on gameplay I think. Once the side-step came into play, I lost interest.

I won't judge until I see the final product.

I'm a pretty big Mortal Kombat fan. It was the fighter series I grew up with. Everyone has one that is closest to their heart, and MK is it with me. But I cannot deny that the games have gone off the rail a little bit. They're losing touch with what made them popular, and the fighting engine tries too hard to be deep without being deep. Plus, the story has lost its pulse a bit.

A new approach will do them a lot of good, I hope. I mean, there is no reason a series with iconic characters such as Sub-Zero, Scorpion, Raiden and Liu Kang can't one day again be awesome.

It's like Carnage in Mrvel Comics. He was badass then. He's lame shit now.

I think MK can come back hard no matter what year it is. The mythology is awesome, the characters are iconic, and Scorpion is still badass.

I'd reboot it and overhaul the engine altogether. The story's convulted right now and the gameplay was ass for a little while already.

Each character better have at least 2 fatalities.

Why do you people care about Mortal Kombat still?

The only reason it was good back then, was because of the gore. It held your minds in a vice like grip because you could rip somebody in half? Now, that doesn't mean anything. The controls suck, and the game did too. There's a reason Midway went under.
