JTG

I'm very ambivalent about him. I dislike that he doesn't have a name. I dislike that he appears to be Vince's "nigger joke". But he's got to be one of the most creative guys they have in terms of in-ring maneuvers. When I watch his matches, I want to be like, "This guy is very impressive, I should root for him". But then I see how he dresses, walks and speaks, and I suddenly remember why I hate him.

I'm sure if he were allowed to act like a person, instead of a BET cartoon, I would officially be able to get behind him. But so far, his two-dimensional "character" is keeping me well at bay.

Thoughts?

#1-norm-fan 07-12-2009 03:10 PM

Maybe his "character" is actually very close to how he acts in real life...

Now who's racist? :nono:

Afterlife 07-12-2009 03:26 PM

Then I just can't like him.

DAMN iNATOR 07-12-2009 03:32 PM

The only thing I really hate about him is his lack of a name, as in what does JTG stand for? Are we supposed to believe that he and Shad Gaspard are related and that the 'G' in JTG is for 'Gaspard'? If so, what the hell is his first and middle names?

That's all I've ever really wondered, and I've always found him quite amusing personally.

If it was, he'd be JTR.

Seth82 07-12-2009 06:16 PM

I've always kinda liked Cryme Time but yeah the name issue bugs me and they really are a cartoon form of a black wrestler

Christ can you imagine if Vince woulda made Bobo Brazil or Rocky Johnson do that gimmick

Woulda been a war with WWE and the NAACP

Juan 07-12-2009 06:19 PM

Shouldn't this thread be titled "Cryme Tyme" since they both have the same gimmick?

Shad has cliche black guy hair, but he's nowhere near as insulting as JTG. His "Money, money" stuff is grating, I'll give you that. But his speech doesn't always make me wanna take a bath with a toaster. Even his attire is passable as realistic.

Shad = Jeans and a tank top.

JTG = Chappelle Show skit.

Johnny Vegas 07-12-2009 07:19 PM

Ever think about the fact that he may not have as much creative control over his character as you think. Or that the whole rolling the one pants leg up was back in the 90s and that he probably thinks that shit is corny as hell but the writers/creative team tell him that thats what they want.

Juan 07-12-2009 07:23 PM

I guess I never looked into it that much because a lot of black people here dress like that. You get used to it

Um...Yes. That's kinda my point.

No...I don't.

#1-norm-fan 07-12-2009 08:52 PM

I love Cryme Tyme, by the way. I really want to see them win the tag titles at some point before they inevitably disband way before they should.

Don't worry, man. They will.:y:

That's because we live in Ohio.

Triple Naitch 07-12-2009 11:16 PM

My mom says there's a lot of white people in Ohio.

Juan 07-12-2009 11:21 PM

Tell your mom I said hello ;)

Exactly.

thedamndest 07-12-2009 11:23 PM

Ohio has a nice Somalian population.

Hornicane 07-12-2009 11:25 PM

Maybe CENTRAL Ohio. If it weren't for National Geographic and news coverage of major pirating events, I don't know that I'd know what a Somalian was.

DAMN iNATOR 07-12-2009 11:47 PM

Most are law-abiding citizens. Some, however, recently took it upon themselves to be pirates(:y:)...

I have my doubts. :-\

Mr. Nerfect 07-13-2009 02:05 AM

I still think that both members of Cryme Tyme will have quite a bit of success in the WWE.

DAMN iNATOR 07-13-2009 02:06 AM

Indeed they will.

My oldest brother's wife is black. Her family is not a collage of BET cartoons. They're normal people. JTG, as a persona -- if you can even call it that -- is pretty much a giant insult.

Juan 07-13-2009 02:18 AM

Like I said, there are people like that all over the country. People who dress like that exist in the real world, not just in WWE and BET. I don't get why it's insult, because you happen not to like that style?

Afterlife 07-13-2009 02:20 AM

Because it's promoting a negative stereotype, Juan.

Juan 07-13-2009 02:20 AM

You'd hate it in California.

Plus, it's not as though WWE portrays all it's black wrestlers like that. If they did, then I'd agree that it's a negative stereotype.

Mr. Nerfect 07-13-2009 03:32 AM

The character doesn't really bother me. He seems to be getting more and more outshined by Shad Gaspard each week, but the energy JTG brings with him, I just seem him as a hypo boy from the 'hood. Sure, not every black guy in the world does, or should act like this, but that doesn't mean that JTG can't, or shouldn't.

I'm finding Cryme Tyme to be improving in the ring, and I find their segments with Jesse AKA Jeezy to be quite humourous. I can see them having singles success in much the same sense that Shawn Michaels and Diesel did. JTG has got the energy and fan support to make it despite being a smaller guy, and Shad has got all the tools neccessary to become a World Champion in the WWE one day -- there, I said it.

One guy portraying a negative stereotype is still a negative stereotype.

Kane Knight 07-13-2009 02:58 PM

I always took the Cryme Tyme gimmick as a satirical deal, so it's never bothered me. They're entertaining, however. Unimpressive wrestling skills, but entertaining.

Mooияakeя™ 07-13-2009 03:01 PM

Apart from the skip-hop dance, he just doesn't stand out. In Cryme Time or on his own for the future.

Elijah Burke is triple anything he'll ever be. Fucking VKM.... the nigger hater.

Do you consider John Cena a negative stereotype?

Not especially. But I also don't consider him good during his matches.

parkmania 07-13-2009 05:46 PM

So, JTG and Shad are negative stereotypes, but the "Pretty Ricky" thing they had <s>K-Kwik</s> R-Truth doing isn't?

Juan 07-13-2009 05:54 PM

I still don't see how JTG is a negative stereotype.

I honestly have no idea what that was, yet.
