Affliction Entertainment Vice President Tom Atencio confirmed Wednesday to Sherdog.com that Josh Barnett has been pulled from an Aug. 1 matchup against Fedor Emelianenko.

The fight was scheduled to headline Affliction and M-1 Global’s “Trilogy” event at the Honda Center in Anaheim, Calif., but Atencio said that the California State Athletic Commission will not license Barnett because he has tested positive for a banned substance. The CSAC will release a statement Wednesday.

Atencio also said he hopes to secure a replacement Wednesday but would not comment on the new matchup until a deal is signed.

Sherdog.com reported Tuesday that Vitor Belfort has agreed in principle to face Fedor, according to two separate sources close to the negotiations. Bobby Lashley is also being considered, among others, but Tuesday night he denied knowing anything about replacing Barnett.

This is terrible news, neither Vitor nor Lashley will be able to defeat Fedor.

I went from definitly buying this PPV to now probably not unless it's cheap.

Lashley refused the fight. He was offered 500k but reckons he'll end up making that when he is ready for these fights and doesn't need it on 11 days notice.

They are trying to get Brett Rodgers from Strikeforce to take the fight. Vitor Belfort agreed to jump 2 weight divisions to take the fight if Rodgers doesn't get the fight.

I bet he didn't want to fight him, so he came up with this plan to make it look like he tested positive for steroids so he wouldn't look like a complete pussy for backing out of the fight.

While the MMA world still waits to hear who will step in on short notice and face the world's No. 1 heavyweight fighter, two names have been officially scratched from the short list of possibilities.

Strikeforce Director of Communications Mike Afromowitz told MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) his organization's heavyweight fighters Fabricio Werdum and Brett Rogers will not be facing Fedor Emelianenko in the main event of "Affliction: Trilogy" on Aug. 1.

Affliction is currently searching for a replacement for Josh Barnett, who was originally scheduled to face Emelianenko but was pulled from the bout after reportedly failing a California State Athletic Commission-administered drug test.

"It's safe to say neither Fabricio or Brett will be fighting on Aug. 1," Afromowitz said. "The plan is still for Fabricio to fight on Aug. 15, and we hope to have an opponent named soon.

"As for Brett, nothing is finalized, but he won't be fighting on Aug. 1."

At a media call addressing the situation held earlier today, Affliction vice resident Tom Atencio had mentioned he was open to working with Strikeforce to seek a replacement for Barnett. The comment fueled speculation that either Werdum or Rogers would take the fight.

The current leading candidate to face Emelianenko appears to be middleweight Vitor Belfort. MMAjunkie.com first reported Wednesday morning that a verbal agreement was in place for the contest, and The Fight Network has since reported a deal has been signed by "The Phenom."

During today's media call, Atencio said nothing should be considered official until he makes an announcement.

"Until you hear it from me, until I have a contract signed, they're all rumors," Atencio told MMAjunkie.com. "It's everybody trying to come out and get their moment in the sun. But until you absolutely hear it from my voice, from me, it's not finalized.

"Until I have a contract, you're not going to hear anything from me. It's pretty cut and dry."

Atencio's last comment was "at this stage, the card is still on". This is leading some to believe the show could be canceled all together? Or am I reading too far into the "at this stage" preface.

Also, last I heard was Barnett's B sample hasn't been tested yet. Now, that probably won't make a difference because Barnett seemed not AT ALL surprised but still.

...it'll probably just be Vitor Belfort which will be a massacre... Not that any other the other 3 matches I mentioned wouldn't be but at least he'd be fighting a heavyweight.

When they were making big moves and had a good first show i thought they could be, but once that elite xc debacle on top of affliction constantly cancelling and moving shows, I knew the show was only going to be around as long as fedors contract.
