Who do you think was the best commentary team?

I have only been watching since 1998 (and not to much recently) but I would have to say

Jim Ross and Paul Heyman had to be the best i have seen. They are polar opposites also just the new smarkish perspective Heyman brought was quite awesome.

kareru 08-16-2009 01:40 PM

scott hudson and armando quintero

Gertner 08-16-2009 01:43 PM

Joey Styles and Cyrus.

CSL 08-16-2009 01:50 PM

Gorilla Monsoon and Bobby Heenan or J.R and Jerry Lawler (until about 2000)

Used to really like Tony Schiavone and Jesse Ventura on Worldwide as well

Tony Schiavone and 'the brain' was always comic gold
rumor has it that Tony Schiavone would 'spike' Heenans water but that's just speculation

The Genius 08-16-2009 02:17 PM

gorilla monsoon and heenan as mentioned by CSLI manning but gorilla and jesse ventura was good too.

This.

Although, I do have a soft spot for McMahon/Savage.

DaveWadding 08-16-2009 02:36 PM

Gorilla and the Brain. Hands down.

Ol Dirty Dastard 08-16-2009 02:36 PM

Seriously, anyone who ever lived as a wrestling fan while these guys were doing their thing and give any other answer to this question should be sterilized to keep their genes from infecting the rest of society.

Definitely Gorilla and the Brain.

CWK 08-16-2009 03:33 PM

I would have to say without a doubt..... Gorilla Monsoon and Bobby The Brain Heenan.

Close ones..... Gorilla Monsoon and Jesse "The Body" Ventura

Also Vince McMahon and Jerry Lawler when Lawler was a true heel in the early days of Monday Night RAW and he would break away from commentary to go harass and degrade Stu and Helen Hart. That was some of the funniest crap ever lol.

Ol Dirty Dastard 08-16-2009 03:38 PM

Honestly Joey Styles and Gertner and Joey and Cyrus were just over the top and ridiculous...and I mean even for wrestling standards. I realize ECW was the "cool" brand in it's day but the commentating was fucked and does not even hold a candle to Gorilla and Bobby. Heenan was over the top but to genius like levels, and Gorilla played it straight.

I totally agree with you and Gertner was the man. Anyone who can pull off a pink bowtie wrapped around a purlple neck brace and just be that damn funny is the man in my book. Gosh Gertner was hilarious

lol I just said I didnt really like them. I mean they were decent, definitely better than Schiavonne nearing the end of his run and Tenay and Don West.

However at the end of the day there wasnothing that made them truly memorable.

Seth82 08-16-2009 04:25 PM

Definately Monsoon and Ventura

Jim Ross and Paul E. were good too

midLfinger 08-16-2009 05:02 PM

I personally always hated how Monsoon would treat the viewer like a bunch of ignorant kids. I know that it was the style of everything wrestling related back then but I always thought, "c'mon! Get off Hogan's jock!" (just not in those words) Also, the Wrestling Observer made him Worst Television Announcer from 91-95 (5 consecutive years) and also in 85 (6 combined).

Personally, I prefer Gordon Solie alone to any "team" of announcers.

Italian $tallion 08-16-2009 06:50 PM

Tazz & Cole :)

Nicky Fives 08-16-2009 07:22 PM

Gorilla & Heenan.... no one has even come close since

Seth82 08-16-2009 07:28 PM

I also liked Joey Styles and Cyrus were favorites of mine as well...

Rogan & Goldberg

Wait a minute, Gorilla was commentating up to 95? I thought he stopped in the early 90s at the latest.

KYR 08-16-2009 08:46 PM

Gorilla and Heenan - don't know how many times I've mentioned that in the past.

Anyone who doesn't think that most likely has had either limited or no exposure to this pairing and if you are a true die-hard wrestling fan I would encourage you to watch some vintage stuff.

Stealth-Icon 08-16-2009 09:28 PM

Booker T and Kevin Nash....or whatever they had there names as that night.

The Pope 08-16-2009 10:37 PM

KYR 08-16-2009 10:38 PM

Actually, he did very few events. Like a PPV or two. The Observer either splits at some point mid-year the period for which one can win an award or they thought those few shows were bad enough for him to get the award for worst television commentator.
