IYO: Helms

Yay or Nay?

Definitely a huge Yay from me. Saw his old WCW CW matches and he was pretty good. Not to mention his glorious interactions with the Rock. I can see him as a future World Champion...probably an ECW Champion.

GreySunshine 10-30-2009 03:45 PM

I  Helms.

The Jayman 10-30-2009 03:53 PM

Yay. I have always liked the Hurricane gimmick and I am really liking this new "darker" Hurricane

Ermaximus 10-30-2009 04:02 PM

Yay. His 3 Count das were comical and he's just grown more as a talent over the years IMO. Digging his fued with Burchill. Hope he wins a title one day.

Hornicane 10-30-2009 04:06 PM

I think it's pretty obvious that I'm fairly indifferent to him.

He had a brilliant match with The Rock on smackdown once. Rock asked him if he is ready to go one on one with the great one, and Helms retorted that the better question is whether he is ready to go toe to toe with the super hero.

Think it's on YT.

They had the comparison between The Hurricane and the Scorpion King. "Haku Masentay (sp?)" Great promo. Month later, HHH buried Hurricane. :shifty:

 that was one of the best skits RAW had where they just went back and forth arguing about which superhero could beat up the other. The Rock basically built up Helms with that series of promos. If I remember correctly, a few months or years later when Triple H faced Shelton Benjamin, Shelton asked Helms backstage how to prepare for his match. Helms just gave him the Pedigree motion to tell Shelton he was going to lose.

His Vertebreaker move in WCW and early WWE was a cool looking move and his recent feud with Burchill trying to prove Helms is the Hurricane has been entertaining.

Cuzziebro 10-30-2009 06:44 PM

Love him. Next Champ. Thank You!

Sixx 10-30-2009 06:46 PM

He's cool, but world champion? You can't be serious.

XCaliber 10-30-2009 07:09 PM

He was great as Gregory Helms but The Hurricane I could easily do without.

This. Helms is very entertaining and is showing that he can do more now with his newest character renovation but he's nowhere near the point that he'd need to be to even be considered a legitimate upper mid-carder, much less a World Champion. I don't see it happening either, being stuck with such a gimmick.

Yay for Helms, but don't succumb to silly Noid fantasies here.

Nark Order 10-30-2009 09:25 PM

PS- Love you Noid!

Afterlife 10-30-2009 10:15 PM

Yeah, really; a superhero gimmick with a world title? Let's be serious. It's not like he's a legitimate threat, like a guy who pretends to be a zombie.

Emperor Smeat 10-30-2009 10:51 PM

I could see him as an ECW champion since that's considered a lower quality/tier title and use it to help develop a new wrestler like Christian is doing with Yoshi/Ryder. Seeing as how RAW's title scene is basically locked up and Smackdown has too much potential variety, very unlikely he can go after those titles.

Ol Dirty Dastard 10-30-2009 11:22 PM

What is Helm's new hurricane like exactly? I don't watch ECW

he needs a darker costume

It's pretty much just a more "angry" version of The Hurricane of old. He's turned up the intensity with the character, and he's not so much a cheesy comedic character anymore.

Basically, he is to Hurricane of old as Nolan's Batman is to previous incarnations. I completely agree with Skip when he says that he needs a darker costume, though.

As for Helms, I do like him as a talent. He is entertaining enough and a good worker. These people talking about him being a future "World Champion" might be kidding themselves a bit. He's a guy that I like, but I wouldn't put him high on my list of guys that really need to be pushed. He's fine doing what he's doing.

Remember when Ric Flair told The Hurricane that if he lost the stupid gimmick, he could really be a star? That was cool. It kind of makes me want to see Helms do something.

Rammsteinmad 10-31-2009 02:11 PM

I've always liked Helms. I liked when he was Gregory Helms because he looked more 'legit', like he could possibly hang in the main event.

Digging his darker gimmick now though. :y:

I think we're all aware of The Undertaker being the exception and not the rule.

ECW Champion. Yes!

Mr. Nerfect 11-01-2009 12:57 AM

I think the best time to take a crack at making Gregory Helms a main eventer, was when Rey Mysterio was World Heavyweight Champion and Helms was WWE Cruiserweight Champion. Helms could have cut a promo about how they have a conundrum on their hands, because being the Cruiserweight Champion means that Helms is better than any other cruiserweight in the WWE; but being World Heavyweight Champion means that Rey Mysterio is better than any wrestler on SmackDown!. Helms could have then challenged Rey Mysterio to a Title vs. Title Match, or something.

Too bad he broke his neck. I'm sure he can get that kind of steam again, I just think it's going to take some time to get him in a position for it. An ECW title win sometime next year could make him an IC title winner later on, and that could re-establish his pre-injury momentum. But that's at least two years away, and even if that was the plan, anything can happen in such a time frame.

I honestly think a Jericho/Hurricane feyd would be the real deal sealer for establishing the superhero as a legitimate force.

Mr. Nerfect 11-01-2009 05:00 AM

I'm still waiting for Paul Burchill to put on a mask and become a supervillain to oppose Hurricane. "The Ripper" with Katie Lea as "The Scarlet Kat."

But next week, while it does seem like the feud-ender between Hurricane and Burchill -- I think it would be cool if they wrestled a really good match, and then Burchill takes a dive after a hard Irish whip, and then doesn't get back up, and claims to have an injured neck. The Hurricane looks all intense, and doesn't let his guard down, but it becomes apparent that he is concerned he really hurt Burchill. From there, have Burchill cut a promo "via satellite" about how his livelihood is now ruined, before he reached the prime of his career, and how The Hurricane can't be much of a hero. Katie Lea also starts talking trash to Gregory Helms backstage, reminding him of what The Hurricane did.

Basically it turns out Paul is faking, and he and Katie are just trying to fuck with Greg Helms and The Hurricane.

Afterlife 11-01-2009 01:42 PM

I"d like them to debut a supervillain under the ECW Initiative.

6'10, over 300 pound veteran exceptions, yes.

Helms will NEVER become a World Champion with his current gimmick. You're being a little ridiculous.

That too. I don't know who I would put under a mask (maybe Heath Slater, because he is an ugly bastard), but I think it would be an effective way to debut someone.

Didn't know Taker was a veteran when he hit the main event.

This is completely honest on my part...I ALWAYS thought that it was Hurricane who delivered the goods in his and Rock's interactions, and even their matches during Rock's 2003 run. No doubt The Rock was still as excellent as ever, but I honestly got more laughs out of Hurricane's lines during his promos with Rocky, and I thought in the ring he also did what very few have done, and that's make Rock elevate his game to an even higher level than it already was at at that late stage in his career.

Anywho, how about a match or two featuring these two just to showcase how well Hurricane actually held his own against the Great One...

I think that ending would have worked better if Austin's music had stopped after he made his entrance, and The Hurricane then rolled up The Rock and got his music playing, before Austin hit Rock with a Stunner to get his musc started again.

I get that it was to promote WrestleMania XIX, but this way would have put a bit more focus on The Hurricane actually beating Rock.

Yeah, agreed 110%. I mean, FFS, it's probably going to stand forever as the biggest win of his career, why not cut off Austin's music, and cue up Hurricane's music after the 3 and let him celebrate his victory, instead of having him fly away backstage like a "scalded superhero"?

Sting Fan 11-02-2009 09:34 AM

Havent really watched much wrestling in a while but I always thought Helms was pretty big for a Cruiser.

Would love to see him ditch the Huuricane gimmick down the road a bit and go after the I.C. title.

Hs build always struck me as a guy that with the right push and his natural charisma could make a World Title challenger if probably not champ. But I think hes one of those people where thats more wrestlings loss than his.

Great performer.
