Top 100 players of the decade

By Rob Neyer at ESPN.

Horrible, horrible list. No Ryan Howard? No John Smoltz? Justin Morneau?

Randy Johnson with 3 Cy Youngs at number 18 behind Bobby Abreu, Lance Berkman, Jim Edmunds (12?), and Scott Rolen (11?)

JD Drew is obviously better than Mariano Rivera

Triple Naitch 12-14-2009 09:56 PM

Horrible list for so many reasons. Corey Koskie?

Supreme Olajuwon 12-14-2009 11:00 PM

LOL Morneau's is so much funnier because Mauer is at 40

BCWWF 12-14-2009 11:06 PM

Didn't read the list, but Corey Koskie is on it?

Hanso Amore 12-14-2009 11:07 PM

46
Placido Polanco

Hey, what's he doing here? Well, he's here because he's been a league-average hitter who's played distinctly better-than-average defense just about anywhere they've put him.

WOW! Being Average makes you one of the 50 best of the decade? WOW!

HORRIBLE LIST.

Every 3rd guy has a "WHATS HE DOING HERE?" snippet. Like even the author knew it was stupid

Melvin Mora was #61...holy crap

I really dont want to comment on this because of my stance on the whole decade issue, but since Mora is pretty much done and all, I think its ok. Mora had 1 really good year in 2004 when he hit .340 with 104 RBI and 27 HRs, but he never even came close to hitting that in any season afterwards. He also had a .961 fielding % at 3B during his run at 3B with the Os which if anything is probably just around average, if not worse.

Also, he was the only full time Os player on that list, though Tejada was on it but he only played with the Os for a couple years. Makes me sad.

SammyG 12-15-2009 04:11 AM

lol @ no Ryan Howard

Droford 12-15-2009 04:16 AM

Ryan Howard's first full season was 2005, so some of the people on the list have at least 5 full years on him if we're going 2000-2009

Loose Cannon 12-15-2009 10:54 AM

wow, just reading your posts makes me cringe. I'm not going to bother reading it

YOUR Hero 12-15-2009 11:08 AM

Howard has done more in a few short years than Placido - for example.

YOUR Hero 12-15-2009 11:11 AM

Awful list.

Loose Cannon 12-15-2009 11:16 AM

ok I looked. wtf Eric Chavez @ 39 right in front of Joe Mauer.

Skippord 12-15-2009 11:40 AM

I got so excited to see Todd Helton I didn't read the rest of the list

Come on, he won a ROY, an MVP and a WS, and has hit more home runs than anyone since 2005.

Halladay at #9 surprises me, he's better than Beltran, Jones & Helton..... he should be at #6

The list has Teixeira saying he didn't start playing "well" until 2004 (arrived in 2003) but with that extra year, Howard still achieved more than Teixeira did until the Yankees title season of 2009. So Howard should at least have been on the list where Teixeira was ranked give or take a few spots.

List is horrible mostly because of the reasoning they gave for certain players over others.

Oh, it's only baseball :(
