Best "War General" Game

Been playing Company of Heroes and have just been digging it, and I love the whole deal with cut scenes showing forces spreading across Europe and the whole war detail and its crazy!

Are there any games out there where you are basically controlling a massive war effort? Not your normal RTS. But troop movement, attacks, defense etc? Anything good?

Hanso Amore 12-26-2009 08:10 PM

Baically My E-Peen wants to command the entire Ally war effort.

LoDownM 12-26-2009 08:23 PM

Supreme Commander is "kinda" like that. Gotta have a pretty powerful computer tho, as armies can get pretty massive.

As LoDownM said, SupCom. Can either go the Xbox360 route, or check your computer specs and see if you got a good rig.

Or get it's predecessor (if you can find it) Total Annihilation.

I don't know if I get exactly what you mean but I am a big strategy gamer and I will see if I can help you.
There is the Hearts Of Iron Series. You pretty much control an entire country during World War II and beyond possibly. You control every aspect of it ranging from technological development to infrastructure (it is quite difficult so you can assign ministers to handle some duties tho.) You move armies and declare wars. However, there is no battles or anything. It is like running a war from a desk. The best part of the game is that you can typically play as ANY country around during that time period. Not all are as fun but hell...if you want to play as say Brazil and you want to join the Axis..you can. You can spread the reich in Latin America and get Axis reinforcements there. The weird historical possibilities are very fun.

Then, not World War II related but probably one of the best strategy games ever made IMO..the Total War Series. It is the same as the game above but set in different historical periods. There is Shogun, Rome, Napoleonic, Imperial, Medieval, etc Total War Games. In those, you do get to command armies right up at the field with thousands of units all over the place. You don't have to fight em tho, you can just assign and appoint generals to fight wars. Don't know if it is your cup of tea..but it is an excellent strategy game.

Hearts of Iron 3 gets boring pretty fast imo. And it's pretty buggy, don't know if the latest patch fixed the bugs or not, uninstalled the game.

Also, there is Ubisoft's upcoming game, Ruse.

Here's the teaser from E3.

The latest installation of the Total War series, Empire: Total War is probably my favorite strategy game to date.

The only thing with that, if you didn't know it already is that you'll need a headset, as it relies on voice commands. But I still found it to be quite a novel concept.
