Ive read that there was a period when edge was a "crazed heel" when was this as his character has always seemed a little unhinged

Not every Edge heel has been crazed. I'd call when he first turned heel (as a singles competitor) as "crazed" and the last time he feuded with Undertaker "crazed". Aside from that, not very "crazed".
