Spider-Man Reboot

So it looks like Fox is rebooting the Spider-Man series now that Raimi dropped out of #4...

My first thought when I read about this was that they were going to take it in some awful new direction, probably making it "gritty and realistic"...

Turns out I was right. That's exactly what they're doing.

I'm not a big comic book fan, but rather a casual lover of movies in general. But holy shit, this is the worst idea I have ever heard.

The very concept of Spider-Man makes the concept of a gritty, stripped down version of the story a disaster from the get go.

How is anybody going to take the story remotely seriously? Spiderman is such an absurd concept to begin with, taking away the "comic book feel" of it will just serve to highlight this fact.

Thoughts from actual Spider Man fans?

PorkSoda 01-12-2010 07:29 PM

Heard that Tobey dropped out of it as well.

I'm not an "actual" Spider Man fan, but I also think it's really stupid.

XCaliber 01-12-2010 07:31 PM

Not only do I think the reboot is too soon but isn't necessery I'm glad that Raimi stuck to his guns and proved just how stupid some of the execs at Sony are.

CSL 01-12-2010 07:35 PM

I couldn't really care less, been pretty indifferent to the Spiderman films. Will 'give it a chance'

Inadequacy 01-12-2010 07:44 PM

Well I've been a spiderman my whole life but only regularly started collecting the comics around the time brand new day began, because I never had access to a comic store until grade 11.

I think you're right that spider-man works best with a light hearted tone, but stories like New Ways to Die and the Gauntlet prove that he can work with a gritty darker tone. I mean his life still revolves around the death of his uncle, that's pretty dark.

I guess all in all I'd enjoy the movie either way.

Kane Knight 01-12-2010 07:49 PM

I'm glad Raim's gone.

Since Raimi's version was stripped down from the get-go, I'm not sure what the bitching is about. But I'm sure there will be more bitching still.

Buzzkill 01-12-2010 07:54 PM

Thing is that it still had that fantastical, comic-book feel to it. If it goes the way of the The Dark Knight, I don't think anybody will be able to take it seriously

Spider-Man's powers are just too wacky

Brujesino 01-12-2010 08:14 PM

this is a horrible idea

there gonna go back to high school and start the story from there..why?everyone already know who spiderman is wew dont need them to go back in time and tell us

they are also saying that they want to appeal more to the twilight fan base

so there you go this movie will suck major ass

thedamndest 01-12-2010 08:22 PM

I will watch this movie when it is available for free online or at a friend's home. Until then, I will complain moderately.

Savio 01-12-2010 08:25 PM

It is to soon for a reboot

parkmania 01-12-2010 09:06 PM

Well, we've still got Broadway...

Disney’s backing makes sense, since Spider-Man is now one of the studio’s prime assets. The mouse house also has lots of Broadway experience as well, having worked with Spider-Man Turn Off the Dark director Julie Taymor on the stage adaptation of The Lion King. The Spidey musical, which features all sorts of complex aerial work to recreate the webslinger’s swinging from building to building across Manhattan, is the most expensive show in the history of Broadway with a price tag north of $50 million just for development.

The current plan is for the show to hold previews in September and then open in November.

Hopefully, and eventually, someone with enough hate for this will start some kind of petition or something illustrating to Sony how fucking stupid they are being and what a mistake it will be and they will just let Raimi get on with it.

Boondock Saint 01-13-2010 01:36 PM

Taylor Lautner as Spiderman

Kalyx triaD 01-13-2010 03:00 PM

This might not be so bad.

BigDaddyCool 01-13-2010 03:06 PM

Kylax likes it, so it much be awful.

Kalyx triaD 01-13-2010 03:09 PM

I also like you.

BigDaddyCool 01-13-2010 03:13 PM

And we all know I'm crap.

Kalyx triaD 01-13-2010 03:17 PM

Anyway, kinda surprised at the reaction to this. I seem to remember people having issues with Spidey 3 and the core cast in general. All of a sudden the net seems to mourn a reboot they practically begged for since Spidey 3.

Funny how fans work.

BigDaddyCool 01-13-2010 03:23 PM

They wanted a good reboot, not just anything. retard.

Kalyx triaD 01-13-2010 03:28 PM

You don't know that this is "anything". Dumbass.

The Jayman 01-13-2010 03:29 PM

Never cared for Spiderman

Fox 01-13-2010 03:31 PM

I will say this, and this only:

Any REAL Spider-Man movie will feature a running voice over by Peter Parker throughout the entire film, and 60% of Spider-Man's lines will be snappy, smart-ass one-liners (100% when he's fighting).

Neither do you. Point is a a gritty stripped down spinderman sounds retarded. Wanting a different verision than what was made and wantinging a good verision are different things.

Hence "might". Comprehension, BDC. Comprehension.

I comprehended the might. And I know it won't be good.

Kalyx triaD 01-13-2010 03:41 PM

But you own a Wii.

BigDaddyCool 01-13-2010 03:45 PM

So.

Kalyx triaD 01-13-2010 03:48 PM

What? You own a Wii, right?

Buzzkill 01-13-2010 07:27 PM

You are not a real nerd if you own a wii!!!!

Jeritron 01-13-2010 10:28 PM

Obviously he's going to like it. It's based on Marvel Comics. I've yet to see him say anything moderately negative about in-development comic movies on here.

No offense Kalyx, just sayin. You seem to love your comic projects and defend them vigilantly

Jeritron 01-13-2010 10:32 PM

It could be good though, he is right. I'd say it has potential as long as they don't try to make it too dark, or too teeny bop like Twilight or that MTV Spiderman cartoon.
The chances are, they'll do one or all of those things.

It could be good if they build the whole thing to be balls to the wall like the comics, and planned it in advance. I wouldn't mind seeing Kingpin and some of the lesser villains showcased. Most of them don't have the depth to carry a movie, but if they're used as henchmen to a larger villain that could work. Plus they could do more in the way of the Sinister Six, The Goblins, Smythe, and eventually the symbiotes.
Planning is good.

As a reboot though, it's way too soon. A Spiderman reboot is fine in concept, and was inevitable. It could do just as well as Batman did, but within 5 years of the previous franchise is ridiculous.
Maybe it will take a long time to get off the ground and the public will grow and appetite/be more open to a new take.

Jeritron 01-13-2010 10:46 PM

Also, replacing J Jonah Jameson is going to be the biggest crying shame. There is no way they're going to be able to do it as well as they did with JK Simmons.

Kalyx triaD 01-13-2010 10:54 PM

Their best bet is to stray from Raimi's JJ as far as possible. Any sort of imitation will be met with war.

Jeritron 01-13-2010 11:14 PM

That's also probably their worst bet. What I'm saying is they're damned if they do, damned if they don't. JJ in those movies is just too good.
Making him too much of a hardass will be boring.

Kalyx triaD 01-13-2010 11:38 PM

Well we can't have him be a nice guy, he's historically a dick. So from here he's either a funny 'break time' character who hates Spidey or a serious hardass editor who hates Spidey. There's certainly degrees but who are we kidding. His Ultimate incarnation is a nice blend, though.

This gets worse and worse...

Is Robert Pattinson the New 'Spider-Man'?

33 minutes ago | TheInsider.com | See recent The Insider news »
"The Insider" has the latest... There are reports that 'Twilight' hunk Robert Pattinson is leaving his fangs behind for another blockbuster franchise -- to take over the role of 'Spider-Man' now that original webslinger Tobey Maguire has announced he won't be doing the next installment. "The Insider" has the truth behind the rumors. Sony/Columbia has denied the rumor telling Et, "Our first step is to find a director." Earlier this week both star Tobey Maguire and director Sam Raimi both announced they would not be back for the next movie. The next 'Spider-Man' movie is scheduled to hit theaters summer of 2012.

BigDaddyCool 01-14-2010 12:20 PM

I don't want a sparkly spiderman.

Jeritron 01-14-2010 02:25 PM

So Raimi's Spidermans are the Burton films, these will be the Schumachers, and in 10-15 years, once the character recovers from the damage, they'll have their Nolans

ct2k 01-14-2010 02:56 PM

To be fair isn't there a pretty low limit to the grit and/or realism that can be portrayed on something like Fox anyway?

Better not be true or I won't even bother going to see it if that were the case.
