Will a woman ever play a professional sport?
I'm talking about NFL, NBA, MLB, NHL, international football/soccer equivilents
|
A woman has played in the NHL, as a goalie for the Tampa Bay Lightning.
A woman could very conceivably play in the NFL as a kicker or punter. A woman would probably not play in Major League Baseball because most women don't play baseball at any high level and high-level softball probably doesn't translate very well. I'd say it's possible that a woman could play in the NBA or a top soccer league, but it'd be pretty rare, in my opinion. Both sports have men who are just too strong and too explosive for a woman to keep up. I'd think a really tough woman could potentially make it as a point guard. |
It's a long way away in the NBA - unless some team does it as a gimmick or something. The best players in the WNBA are no where near the caliber of NBA players right now.
I don't see a women ever punting in the NFL. Maybe a kicker but I don't even know about that. |
I think a young and feisty woman (ie like a female boxer) could *someday* get a shot as a point guard in the NBA. It would have to be an incredibly strong, tough, and scrappy player, but I wouldn't rule it out.
Don't see any reason to rule out a woman as a punter in the NFL either, to be honest. |
I don't think so. At least not in hockey or football. I could see maybe Baseball or Basketball having a slight chance, but I still went with NO.

Keep dem bitches in the kitchen.

Anyway wasn't that just a pre season game or something? I highly doubt a woman would actually be a member of an NHL team for a season. |
|
I could honestly see a woman playing 1st base and filling a Derek Jeter type hitting role.
Other than that, I don't really see it...kickers really need big legs, and I don't think a woman would be able to keep up on defense as an NBA point guard - hell, white guys are generally viewed as too unathletic to play good defense |
Unless we're talking intergration...
We have WNBA already, but with the money woes, that could be a thing of the past in a few years. Does Golf count as well? |

Hasn't Annika Sorrenstam (sp?) and Michelle WIE already played on the PGA? I guess that means golf does not count
|
The fastest woman in the world is faster than the average NFL wide receiver. All it takes is one genetic freak to actually make this an issue.
|
Can she catch?
|
Chyna could also bench press over 300 pounds I think. God knows what she was doing, but there are women out there that can do that sort of stuff.

In sports that already have the genders divided (ex. WNBA vs NBA, Men soccer vs Women soccer), I doubt it will occur since there would be no real need unless its for a publicity stunt or if the woman knows she will succeed. For sports without a female equivalent, it would be possible but probably in specific positions like maybe an outfielder in MLB or a place holder in NFL.
It should be the easiest in individual sports such as track & field, NASCAR, tennis, and golf since those sports are based on individual skills than team skills and strategy, Biggest problem is how much resistance will the fan base and the public do when something changes a tradition or current way (ex. NBA fans upset at the thought of a woman ref in the NBA even though most male NBA refs are horrible). |

What are you talking about, there's only women in the NHL, NFL, and NBA

Just did a Google search and apparently there is something similar to a National Baking Association but adds an I to the initials for Industrial.
National Baking Industry Association (NBIA) located in Australia for baking companies. |

I guess Danica Patrick doesn't count...

Driving a car is less of a sport than bowling...
|
Not a snowballs chance in hell will a female ever play in the big 4. If you really believe that one could than you need your head examined.
|
Except maybe Chyna.
|
But she has a penis... so I guess no women still
|
Hayley Wickenheiser played professional hockey in Finland for a couple years I think. It's no NHL but it is pro.
I really don't think a woman would be able to play in any top end sports league. The guys are just so much better athletically I doubt a woman could keep up. Even kicking in the NFL, I don't see women being able to kick as hard as a guy. |

damn someone already said that

I seem to remember a few years ago Mia Hamm was just messing around with the Kansas City Chiefs and was making something like 30 yard field goals with both legs. Some D-1 college had a female kicker for a bowl game a couple of years ago too. I would think being and NFL kicker would be the only realistic option. Maybe a pitcher, there was a women that pitched in the Japanese pros last year, I think it was just an exhibition game though.
|
I don't see it happening..... a woman will never play in the NHL again unless she's a golaie like Manon, because they don't hit in women's hockey and pretty sure a chick would get raped along the boards (not sexually)..... only sport I can see it happening in is basketball, because most players are soft as shit and physical strength is not as much as an asset in the NBA then the other big 4

If the woman player has speed though, it could be like Ichiro or other fast players who go for singles but very dangerous in stealing bases. |
It'll happen eventually.
Ann Meyers had a tryout with the Pacers, but didn't make the team. Manon Rheaume played some preseason games for the Tampa Bay Lightning, as has been mentioned. Jackie Mitchell struck out Babe Ruth and Lou Gherig in back-to-back at bats. If not for the blatent sexism, she may have been good enough to play in the Majors, and that was in 1931. Several women have been kickers in College football, and I know girls who played in High School at other positions. Eri Yoshida is already playing Pro Baseball in the US for the Chico Outlaws. We'll see it in the next 25 years, it's already happened in other countries. Only a matter of time until a female becomes good enough to get a shot here. Quote:
