Is "McIntyre" really pronounced "MacIntyre"?

Or do they just do that because they think McIntyre would be too hard for kids to say?

Juan 02-10-2010 02:44 AM

Pardon my ignorance, but how else would it be pronounced?

The Destroyer 02-10-2010 02:51 AM

It shouldn't be, technically speaking what with Mc and Mac being different, but McIntyre and Macintyre are generally pronounced exactly the same.

Emcee Intyre

NeanderCarl 02-10-2010 12:39 PM

I think its generally pronounced "Mac" if followed by a suffix beginning with a vowel, and "Muck" if the next letter is a consonant.

Hence "MuckDonalds", "MacIntyre", "MuckMahon", "MacAdam", "MuckCartney", "MacIntosh" etc etc

NeanderCarl 02-10-2010 12:40 PM

Unless your name is Gerry Brisco.

Lock Jaw 02-10-2010 02:20 PM

I should look in the phonebook for a guy with the last name McIntyre, call him, and ask him how to pronounce his last name. Settle this once and for all.

The Jayman 02-10-2010 02:30 PM

my last name begins with Mc and it is pronounced "Mick"

NeanderCarl 02-10-2010 02:38 PM

Well then you're pronouncing it wrong.

Where do you live?

The Jayman 02-10-2010 02:39 PM

Tennessee

NeanderCarl 02-10-2010 02:46 PM

Right.

It's supposed to be "muck" but I guess it's just morphed over the years, according to accent and regional dialect etc.

NeanderCarl 02-10-2010 02:48 PM

I'm guessing the "muck" variation just emerged out of "mack" anyway, so really they should all be mack.

The Jayman 02-10-2010 02:50 PM

you're right on the accent part. around here people pronounce it "mick" but when I go visit my parents in West Virginia they either use the "muck" or sometimes even the "mac"

So you've thought your parents had your name wrong for all these years? My family has a "Mc" in their history, and as traditionalists I believe we say "Muck," but Australians are so whiny it's hard to tell.

Also, pretty sure everyone over here says "Mack Donald's." I try and make it a point to say "Muck Donald's." Am I right NeaderCarl?

The Mackem 03-18-2010 03:53 AM

Depends what the adverts tell me.

Johnny Vegas 03-18-2010 12:05 PM

NeanderCarl 03-18-2010 04:42 PM

I've always said MuckDonald's, everyone I know has always said MuckDonald's... or Mucky D's

Nervous Ferret 03-18-2010 05:07 PM

Mucky D's what

Lock Jaw 03-19-2010 02:01 PM

I dunno... I always say "MickDonald".

Never even heard of the concept of it being pronounced "muck". Is "muck" just a way of saying "mack", but with an accent?

Xero 03-19-2010 07:24 PM

jsroka 04-24-2010 12:46 AM

I noticed that the announcers blend the Mc instead of saying "mac" and thought it was kind of weird.
