If the Dodgers fail to land Epstein, the job likely will go either to San Francisco assistant GM Ned Colletti or Dodgers assistant GM Kim Ng, the newspaper reports.

GM Jim Hendry Hendry said Garciaparra "is in a situation where he should go out and find if there is a better fit. With our situation at third, he's not going to play there, [though] he did fine when he got over there." The Cubs are pursuing free-agent shortstop Rafael Furcal.
