Well not so much a babyface as a ruthless badass that is now addressed as being cheered by the crowd. The way they booked him in that match (getting put through the announce table, ganged up by SmackDown! wrestlers, etc.) makes him look like a comeback artist.
I'm going to take a stab in the dark and say Angle says he doesn't need to face HBK, since he's on SmackDown! now, and we still don't know who the better man is, so Michaels wins the Royal Rumble, and we get HBK on SmackDown! leading up to WrestleMania 22, where Angle has HBk in the Ankle Lock, but Michaels won't give until Vince rings the bell.
