This guy over at WrestleCrap hit the nail on the head when it comes to Cena, read:

Then he won the U.S Title. And turned into Superman in the process while forgetting what got him over in the first place: The edgy raps. Plus his moveset became increasingly lower and lamer. Instead of the throwback and the guilltone legdrop he started using the five knuckle shuffle more and pumping up his reeboks.

As U.S Champ he pretty much killed the credibilty's of every challenger, even the 2 guys who beat him for the title in 2003, Booker T and Carlito. But then it got worse. He won the WWE Title.

At the start of his reign things started ok. But when he moved to Raw and started facing more credible challengers like Y2J & Angle, the fans turned on him. Plus his booking was frickin terrible, he was constantly booked into handicap and special referee matches and lumberjack matches and STILL came out winning. Here's some examples:

Cena defeated Snitsky in a Lumberjack match despite every lumberjack being hand picked by nemesis Eric Bischoff.

Cena defeated Carlito and Y2J in a 2 on 1 handicap match. Despite interference from Eric Bischoff

John Cena defeated Tyson Tomko in a match after suffering a concussion earlier in the night and completely no selling this.

Cena defeated Angle and Tomko in a 2 on 1 handicap match

Cena defeated Angle at Survivor Series despite Daivari being guest ref.

Cena defeated Masters and Angle in a triple threat by submission even though he was the only guy who never had a submission finisher.

Cena and HHH defeated Angle, Rey and Orton at Saturday Nights main event wen Cena pinned Orton despite getting pedigreed by his own partner HHH and the match turning into 4 on 1. The lack of team work by the Smackdown team in failing to cover Cena also made them look extremely weak.

All this while having new found attitude that was as exciting as watching paint dry.

Even when he lost the booking was terrible:

Whilst losing to Angle in a first blood match on RAW, Angle had the ankle lock locked on for several minutes. Cena didn't tap. Cena locked in the STFU on Angle who tapped within seconds.

Angle is an olympic gold medallist at wrestling. Cena isn't.

He finally lost the Title to Edge. That after he defeated 5 other guys in an Elimination Chamber match. And fought off what turned into a handicap match with Carlito & Masters as the last 3. Plus he kicked out of a spear by Edge too.

Cena was booked against more credible wrestlers who fans believed he couldn't beat (Angle the obvious person) and made them look like idiots.

Of course this is not Cena's fault, it is WWE. In reality Cena is possibly the nicest WWE star you will ever meet (as i can say personally myself). But the WWE have sucked all the good points of his character away. And now have no idea what to do with him.
