Well, it would be one of two things.
One, he was buying time to set up for the next spot. It's not the first nor the last someone missed something completely and the other guy sold something.
Two, he was afraid he was going to fall on his head. I wouldn't want anyone crashing down onto my head. He could have broken his neck if the guy doing the SSP hit his head in the wrong spot.
