OK, honestly now, I know people will hate me for this, but why not Jeter for MVP? Sure, he is overrated, but he is also hitting .352 with 67 RBI, 74 runs, 24 stolen bases, .426 OBP, and is one of the better defensive players at his position. His stats, for a No. 2 hitter, are pretty good, yes, but that's not all.
Think about the Yankees. They have absolutely no right to be where they are right now. Throw the payroll out the window, because some of the highest paid players are not playing. Gary Sheffield has been their best player for the past two seasons, OUT. Hideki Matsui has been as consistant of a 5-hitter as you can get, OUT. Johnny Damon was out for a big chunk of the year, Robinson Cano has been on the DL, and Whateverthehellhisnameis Wang is their No. 2 pitcher. Then, Alex Rodriguez has been merely average this season, as has Damon, Posada, Williams, hell, everybody but maybe Giambi's power numbers.
You can't say he doesn't deserve it because the front office made bad moves. You can't say he doesn't deserve it because his teammates are injured or not performing either. That is because through all of this, through how shitty the Yankees are, or should be, they are leading their division and Jeter has been great.
I don't honestly think he will get it, or even get serious consideration for it, but right now his team team is statistically worse than the Red Sox and the White Sox, yet they are above them in the standings.
