Metallica was the biggest band during the Black Album stage. Fuck you I"m not going to go dig up stats and shit. That album still does massive sales.

I was watching the History of Metal and they said the metal bands ahead of Metallica in the 80s were Motley Crue and Twisted sister. Reason: they had gimmicks, metallica is ugly.

I do actually enjoy Load and Reload. Yeah it's a lot different from their older shit, but it's still very distinct. St. Anger had a couple good songs and a bunch of loud noises.
