I'm a member of the AGS (Adventure Game Studio) forums, and the fine people there release some awesome freeware adventure games, some are classic low-res (320x200), some are high-res (640x480 or 800x600), and most of them are excellent quality.

I play the free remakes of King's Quest I, II, and III. People in the community are working on a Space Quest III remake with better graphics. But there are some great original games there, too.

I was working on a game myself for a time, but then I lost everything in a hard drive crash and haven't touched the project ever since. But yeah, most of my free games are adventure games created by fans of the genre.
