Mariners continue to look retarded:
Mariners signed RHP Miguel Batista, who had been with the Diamondbacks, to a three-year contract.
Terms haven't been released, but the deal is worth $24 million-$27 million. Batista had a 4.80 ERA while being used mostly as a starter with the Jays in 2004 and a 4.58 ERA in a hitter's park in the NL last year. Even with Safeco helping him, it seems unlikely that he'll get under 4.50 next year. At least he is durable, even if last year was the first in his career in which he threw 200 innings. It's just an awful lot of money to spend on a fourth starter.
Also:
The Rays are close to finalizing a three-year deal with import Akinori Iwamura.
An option for a fourth year is expected to be included. The two sides have until midnight Friday to make the deal official.
