Its astonishingly good.
I'll try and highlight the main good points dno't have time to go fully into it:
- Its essentially a show which examines the decline of an American city (Baltimore), examing the police dept, the projects/drug dealers, the mayors office, the school system and so on
- Its realistic and doesn't romanticise about any of its subject matter
- The cast is almost entirely made up of fantastic character actors
- The Dialogue is superb
- The attention to detail is untrue
- Despite being a cop/drug dealer show primarily, there are no good guys and bad guys
- It forces you to watch and concentrate to a level you normally wouldn't as its plotlines are so detailed and complicated, events take place chronologically most of the time so there are no flashback scenes
- The writers really dont attempt to explain everything to you in plain language through the dialogue like most cop shows. I think that adds to the realism of the dialogue too btw.
