Plus the midcarders were so over.

It was a time where in addition to the big main eventers and storylines, you could actually have a midcarder challenge the champion in a match and it be exciting. Even knowing better, you could still amost percieve them as having a shot and it was so well done that it built the credibility of the champion and pushed the midcarder at the same time.
I'll always remember how good some of those normally throwaway Raw title matches were. Like HHH's two title shots on Raw as leader of DX. Or Xpacs.
