Same with major league baseball, it's all just a nasty brawl.

What separtes lacrosse and hockey fights from other sports most people over look. Those are the only two sports in which you have a weapon in your hand at all times. If football players hit each other with sticks you'd see a lot of one on one fights. Some guy slashes you across the wrist, you or your team "tough guy" will get paypack via fighting. In other sports, there's no real payback to be had, hence the wild bench clearing brawls.

Hockey got into the staged fights a few years ago lacrosse sorta does but you don't see two guys get 1 minute of playing time a game, meet at centre and go at it. Sometimes yes, but not as much as hockey.

It is very very very hard to explain fighting to somebody who's never played in a sport that "allows" it. If the NHL got rid of fighting all togheter, you'd see a lot more stick swinging.
