Jaws is an important film because it was the first modern blockbuster of American cinema. It created a season for blockbusters with huge budgets and huge release numbers. It also introduced the trend of licensing films and characters for merchandise. The soundtrack was also huge in promoting the movie and was one of the first film soundtracks to make a sizeable amount of money. It was the first film with trailers on network television. The focus of movie producers shifted from making money at the box office to money merchandising (and eventually syndication and VHS/DVD sales) Jaws is responsible for the movie going experience of today.
I'd like to see the Megaloadon do THAT
