Keep in mind, the issue was the money per year or signing bonus, the issues was he wanted to void a year of his contract, something that no pat player has done (see: Brady & Seymore).
I just couldn't see them doing things for Branch that they wouldn't do for those two.

I don't know, I bet they could have worked something out without having to void out his final year. While Branch got his payday in Seattle, he would be better off staying in the Patriots system and putting up #'s and getting even more money down the line. So I am sure they could have worked something out, but I just think they wanted to make an example of this situation. I mean I can't really fault them too much though, they made it pretty far in the post-season and now they have two first round picks to get some players to help in the areas they where lacking last season (MLB and DB)
As for players not being happy, I don't think Washington would complain since he has never caught a lot of balls in his career...and for Welker I can't see him being the type of dude who will be getting upset plus he will be getting plenty of touches on returns. Also, I can't see Stallworth (or any of the other wideouts for that matter) putting up much of a fuss since they probably realize there is a lot of other capable wideouts on the team.
