Spiderman appeals to more of the general masses as does Pirates. LOTR was popular, but I think a bigger portion of that fanbase is hardcore fans of the book etc.

I happen to like LOTR first, Pirates, then Spiderman, but it wouldn't kill me to have never seen the Spiderman movies.
