Lakers are right, Odom/Bynum > O'Neal.
I don't think the Lakers have made bad moves in the past year or two. Sure, with a dominant big man and Kobe they could be contenders. But where are they going to get a dominant big man? Jermaine O'Neill? Give me a break. The type of guy they need is KG or Duncan, and they aren't going to get him. Better off with young players than overpriced, underachieving veterans.
I would imagine that if Kobe is that upset then the Lakers will be trading him for a younger player who could very soon reach superstar status (Ginobili, Paul, Deng etc., of course the Lakers would demand more than just Kobe for Paul though). Or else they trade him for a series of real good, real early draft picks. I doubt Portland or Seattle is going to be trading this year, but if they can find a shitty team willing to give up two first rounders that will easilly be lottery picks, I think they take it.
The problem with the NBA right now is that the general managers are horrible and there are very few good teams. What will most likely happen with Kobe is that he will end up going to a team like the Knicks or the Wizards and never win a championship. It is pretty unlikely that the Lakers can develop a supporting cast to win a championship in the next five years, but it is much smarter to start young than to go for FA's.
