Christian was another guy who was mishandled (particularly in his last year when he was getting huge reactions).
Want to know what the WWE's BIGGEST problem has been the last 6 years in my opinion?
The WWE are too fixated on the old (and outdated) idea of faces and heels.
The WWE, for the past 6 years, keeps making mistakes with their (heelish) characters that are being cheered. Instead of "going with that flow", they deliberately convert them into boring faces....ones of which kiss the fans asses....and the fans themselves don't like it.
Am I saying that faces and heels should not exist? No...I am not saying that at all. What I am saying however, is that fans appreciate solid CHARACTERS more than if someone is a "heel" or a "face." The fans don't WANT to be told who to cheer for. The fans will cheer whoever has the COOLEST character.
It's the same reason why the fans cheered Austin during his feud with Brett. It's the same reason why The Rock became such a huge face back in 1999. It's the same reason why Lesnar and Orton were cheered so heavily during Summerslam in 2002 and 2004 respectively.
LET THE FANS REACT TO THE CHARACTER HOW THEY WANT TO REACT.
Orton and Lesnar for instance, could have been HUUUGE faces down the road....had the WWE simply kept their patience. Instead, both made premature face turns.
In 2004 when Guerrero won the WWE title.....they deviated from his "lie, cheat, steal" gimmick and tried to give him a more deeper and 'family values' side. When Guerrero lost his title to JBL, his career was in decline. The WWE screwed up here as well.
When Cena became popular.....he stopped rapping. He stopped being original. All of his promos became scripted.

I mean seriously, WTF?!??!
In 2005 when HBK (heel) fought Hogan, HBK received huge FACE like reactions.....because his character was so awesome. What did the WWE do? After Summerslam, they turned him into his old stale and boring character.
The most obvious example of the WWE shitting the bed? Anytime they tried to push Angle as a face (deliberately). Notice how most of Angle's LOUDEST face pops was when he was a heel? (or when he had JUST turned face and the fans were simply reacting to him based on his recent previous character).
As soon as Angle "tried" to act like a face and started being "nice", his pops became lukewarm. Had the WWE simply kept his heelish character, he would have been cheered like a face.
Bottom line? The WWE, for the past 6 years, keeps making mistakes with their (heelish) characters that are being cheered. Instead of "going with that flow", they deliberately convert them into boring faces....ones of which kiss the fans asses....and the fans themselves don't like it.
