Because Randy took him out in kayfabe a few months back. I actually thought this was a nice touch of continuity for a change. Normally HBK would probably just come back like Orton never did a thing to him.
It's probably more coincidence though, since Orton happens to be champ and HBK happens to be returning on the same night. But it works out well.
Of course, on the other side of thing continuity is kinda garbage since HHH was taken out in January by Orton and him and HBK were DX, yet HBK doesn't come out to reform DX. Which is funny since HBK kept DX going without Triple H and actually gave a fuck about him then, but suddenly it's like they weren't a stable this year?
Even though HBK was fine with HHH in the summer, and even defending his honor, they're probably gonna play the whole "you went and got injured and left me to carry DX blah blah blah" card for the inevitable HHH/HBK fued within the next year.
It's wrestling, and HBK returned cuz they needed him and you put that shit on the end of the show.
But at least they got one continuity right, which is more than normal.
