Not surprised you said that. Alot of people frowned on it being so different. The side scrolling battles and more traditional RPG elements (well, traditional in terms of how we see RPGs now) was a turn off when we see how Zelda games are usually played.
I enjoyed it, though. The change of pace just meant you REALLY had to be good as a Zelda player. It was also the first Zelda game to introduce magic into the franchise.
I didn't like some of the cheap deaths you could experience in the game, though (I lost count of how many times I died because I was jumping from one part of a bridge to the second only to have one of those skeleton head things come out of the water at EXACTLY the right time to knock me into the water). The controls also have a bit of a steep learning curve. And Link on the overworld walks like a fucking penguin.
All that, though, and I enjoyed it because the good outweighed the bad for me.
