Those external addon coolers are rubbish, likely to cause more damage than help.
I recommend getting the plug and charge kit, and then recharging your controller with it after you turn off the console. It'll leave the fans running until the controller is charged, and it'll help cool off the heatsinks. I make sure I do it every time I turn my 360 off.

I've got some upgraded internal fans in mine, they are quieter, and flow more than the standard fans, although you have to void the warranty to open it. If you were contemplating such a move, then you'd want to upgrade your heatsink clamps and thermal paste at the same time. As far as I'm concerned it's a permenant way of making sure your console never RRODs.
