5 or 6 other bands having the same success in the same year is no big deal. especially for the type of music nirvana played. I can totally understand why a bland cookie cutter alternative like pearl jam would outsell nirvana at the time. wang chung outsold the ramones too, no biggy, people are idiots. and if we are comparing sales as a basis of how good a band is, then cobain beats staley anyway.
i don't really get why you're looking for traditional showmanship in a grunge band by the way. being a showman in the traditional way would be to miss the point, the point being the music i suppose.
i'd be curious to hear which bands you regard of having more lasting effect from 1990 onward too. no shit the beatles/sabbath/abba/zeppelin etc have all had a huge lasting effect but i don't think any of their contemporaries come close in that regard either.
and if you want to list subjective reasons why AIC are better than nirvana songwriting-wise i'd be glad to play along.
