Here's another set of spoilers from the show.
Quote:
- Dark Match: Paul Birchall (w/ Kate Lea) defeated Funaki. Kate was announced as Lea but called herself Kate Birchall. They were doing the Cruel Intentions gimmick. Birchall worked stiff as hell. His new finisher puts his opponent in a surfboard-like position and then curbstomps their head into the ground. It looked sick.
ECW was taped first for obvious reasons.
-Rey Mysterio defeated Curt Hawkins & Zach Ryder by DQ. Rey had one of them up for the 619 but the other grabbed a chair and brought it into the ring. The referee disqualified the Edgeheads before they even used the chair. Rey dropkicked the chair into his face and used it to chase them away.
Backstage Chuck Palumbo and Jamie Noble argue. They are teaming tonight but only because of Michelle.McCool.
- Jamie Noble, Chuck Palumbo, and Michelle McCool fought John Morrison, The Miz, & Layla to a no contest. Noble and Palumbo get into it in the ring and Palumbo accidentally sends McCool flying off the apron and onto the floor. The referee stops the match to check on McCool and orders Miz, Morrison, and Layla to just stand on the other side of the ring. As they are stretchering McCool out Palumbo turns on Noble and beats him down for a good ten minutes. He even takes out the ref TWICE in some UWF level no selling. The beating on Noble continues FOREVER. Michelle McCool makes a miraculous recovery and gets off the stretcher but is accidentally elbowed in the face by Palumbo. Palumbo continues to beat on Noble and then kicks McCool while she's down before he leaves. Noble, who is still conscious after getting beaten forever, crawls over to McCool before she is stretchered out. Meanwhile the tag champs are standing there looking like goofs. The crowd turned on this segment bad and I'll be curious to see if they edit it down any.
MVP comes out to talk about his and Ric Flair's career. We go through a series of photoshops that shows MVP winning his first World Title while Flair is playing golf, and MVP getting inducted into the Hall of Fame while Flair is playing shuffleboard in a nursing home. This brings out Flair who says that he admires MVP but that the golf playin', shuffleboard winnin', nursing home patient (Wooo!) will not retire at the Rumble. This may have been Flair's last show in Virginia.
- Jimmy Wang Yang (w/ Shannon Moore) defeated Domino (w/ Deuce & Cherry). Deuce tried to interfere but Shannon Moore took him out with a hurracanra off the apron.
- Finlay and The Great Khali fought to a No Contest in a Belfast Brawl. Pretty generic until Khali had Finlay down and he tried to chokeslam Hornswoggle through the announce table. Finlay stopped him and grabbed the shillelagh and went to town on Khali. I mean, he must have hit Khali about 30 or 40 times with the shillelagh and then hit him some more with a chair. Finlay and Hornswoggle just left after that.
Backstage Vince talks to Hornswoggle and reminds him that the Royal Rumble is every man for himself and that he can't trust even Finlay. He says that Hornswoggle's last name isn't Finlay, its McMahon.
Batista came out and wished Rey Mysterio luck in his match against Edge at the Royal Rumble. He then guaranteed victory in the Rumble Match.
- Undertaker defeated Big Daddy V. BDV kicked out of a chokeslam and Taker kicked out of the Boss Man Slam. Taker tried to go for the Triangle Choke early on but BDV worked out of it, but Taker eventually cinched it in and Big Daddy V tapped out. Taker kept it on and BDV started spitting up blood. Mark Henry came out looking concerned and helped carry Big Daddy V to the back.
- Edge (w/ Hawkins & Ryder) defeated CM Punk. Rey Mysterio was on commentary. Outside of one botched springboard clothesline (that will probably be edited out) this was a really good, competitive match. The finish came when Punk flipped over Edge off the top rope but Edge caught him with a spear. Punk came off really well here. After the match Rey Mysterio ran off Edge and the Edgeheads and stared them down.
Post-show Dark Match:
Batista, Rey Mysterio, & CM Punk defeated Edge, Curt Hawkins, & Zach Ryder. Edge and Co. came back out to have a match and Batista came out to even things up. This was by far the best post-show dark match I've seen. Rey got the win with the 619 and the three faces spent a long time celebrating with the fans afterward. They did a funny spot where all three of them did Batista's rope shaking pose but with Batista holding the top rope, Punk holding the middle rope, and Rey holding the bottom rope.
All in all this was a really good show, including ECW. The Palumbo-Noble stuff was really bad but otherwise everything was either good or fun. The new set looks great. They had a lot of technical problems throughout the night though. They had to retape Rey Mysterio's, Kofi Kingston's, and the Edgeheads' video entrances again and it looked like Cole and Coach were having difficulties with sound earlier. Some things would flash up on the big screen from time to time like the Raw logo or MVP's logo on the sides when Kofi Kingston came out. They also had trouble cueing up the intro for ECW, which also seemed to run really long.
