I recently purchased an Mp3 player by the name of "Insignia" after my iPod crapped out on me.

The one I have is only 4gb, but I'm sure you can find one with more memory. The 4GB was only $70, so I'm guessing a higher model will be within your $300- price range.

It's very easy to use, the layout is simple and efficient, and it operates off of a real wheel track ball as opposed to the "touch only" track ball of the iPod, which I found to have problems after a certain amount of time.

Best features on it though are that it's all drag-and-drop loaded. You only need to download the mp3 software that comes with it, but after that, you can use any music downloading system to drag and drop your music directly into the player when its connected with a USB cable.

The other awesome feature is that you can create playlists on the go. You don't have to create it on your computer and THEN load it, you can actually create a "Now Playing" track listing from the player itself. It also has FM Radio, video, and the sound is quite good.
