Spoilers so anyone who hasn't seen episode 8 do not read:

As far as the major event of ep 8 though, I think it was done right. It coulda been all guns blazing but that woulda been too cliche and not in fitting with his character or the show in general. David Simon has said before that his was the only character with any mythical elements to it, I think the fact that it got brushed aside by the Sun news room was a fantastic touch too, even more subtext highlighting the divides within the American city, the guy was a living legend on the Westside and just another black body downtown.
