To me, and the whole Taker reverting back to the old gimmick wasn't a big deal to me, I thought it was false advertising.
All the build up made it seem like he would be back as the old Deadman, what we got at Mania was a change from biker Taker to Cowboy Taker. Now he did sit up, and he did use the Tombstone, and he did have Paul Bearor, but aside from that, it was the same old guy.
Its funny because when Taker left I was enjoying his character as much as Ive ever enjoyed him. He was selling a lot more, he had that awesome match with Angle, and I just figured we might finally be at a point where he would be showing some weakness, which would lead to him finally putting people over.
However, now with the new gimmick I think they've painted themselves into a tough corner. My thinking was that the Old School gimmick would be white hot for a couple of months or so, and then die off. I actually thought it could lead to some increases in house show gates because people who have left might be drawn back to see Taker again. However, with the new look, I dont think anyone will be banging down doors to see this look, which is same as the Biker Taker, only now he has a new hat.
It was a tough spot for Calloway because he was against the gimmick change, but Vince pushed it hard and Taker backed down. Now, for all we know, it may come out that Taker kicked up a fuss and the result was that Vince agreed to let him come out as a hybrid of all the gimmicks.
Who knows, maybe people are satisfied with the music and the urn and the lack of selling, for me its not new enough to be cool in a retro way and its too goofy to be current, so I dont know.
Of course the biggest thing with all this is that Taker has no purpose right now. He wont be putting anyone over, hell he wont be selling nevermind putting anyone over. Unfortunately for him there are no heels left to beat. He squashed Kane at Mania, so there's no reason for a rematch. Angle if he can work will be married to Eddie. Show could be used as fodder for Taker, and thats about it. I dont see a logical intriguing fued for Taker at this point.
