Licensing has always been a huge issue. There's no "suddenly" here, and nobody called you a retard.
In reality, do you honestly think that the games would be exactly as they are now if the designers had completely free reign? We'd see Zepplin and Floyd and the Beatles (Rock Band, if not GH) and probably a bunch of others. Those are just the easiest examples. Some artists are easier to work with in terms of licensing than others. Then there's the issues of masters or rerecording with a studio band. Some artists want too much, even when they don't lend their original masters, which makes it not worth it for them.
Others are easier to work with. For example, you could sum up most people's interest in Sting in three songs, yet they keep putting him up on Rock Band and Guitar Hero. Think it's because he's synonymous with guitar legends? Yeah, they chose Syncronicty II over Stairway, and licensing has JUST become a problem.
