Background Information
Sonic Unleashed is the next exciting installment in the Sonic The Hedgehog series. The game's title was trademarked by Sega on 12th March 2008 and the first screenshots of cut scenes and gameplay were posted on 22nd March 2008. Gameplay footage was also released in the form of a video.
The game is currently being edited upon by Sega's development teams from Japan, America, and Europe in an attempt to reinvent the franchise for a multiplatform release in November 2008. A new character has also been announced, but no screen or plot details of the character have been given.
It is unknown if any characters other than Sonic will be playable, though it is rumoured that Tails and Knuckles will also be playable.

Plot
From the screenshots so far, it can be garnered that Doctor Eggman has managed to defeat Super Sonic by neutralising his powers. It is also confirmed that there will be a werewolf version of Sonic in the game. Speculation about the purpose of this new character ranges from the game's main enemy to a transformation of Sonic.
It has been revealed that the setting for this new game is the desolate and unpredictable world of Mubuz, a world dictated by an evil Dragon Lord called Immarius. Upon entering Mubuz, Sonic fights an evil power which turns all the inhabitants into dangerous beasts.
Recently revealed concept images also show the planet exploding.
Sonic Unleashed is set to follow on from the events of Sonic The Hedgehog Next-Gen.

Gameplay
The game appears to be a 3D sidescroller, similar to Sonic Rivals, with occasional shifts to on-rails gameplay with the camera behind Sonic, much like Sonic and the Secret Rings. A speed meter can also be seen in the bottom left corner of some screenshots, but whether this has any major gameplay impact has yet to be seen or announced. Also, it seems that there is a ring meter which acts as the Tension Gauge in the Sonic Rush games, which can be used for speed boosts. It is uncertain how the style of gameplay will change due to Sonic's apparent contraction of lycanthropy
