They started off defensively, not wanting to make the first mistake, not wanting to get behind the other by a fall, and the story told was fantastic. Bret stated he was going to out wrestle HBK but in the begining, HBK got the best of him, frustrating Bret. Bret started to lose his cool and acted more heelish, and eventually his skill in the wrestling department took over Shawn who couldnt hold it down forever, and Bret then had the advantage, with Shawn now going out of his way to employ his own style, which lead to mistakes.
Then in the last half of the match the pace had quickened considerably, and Bret realizes HE doesnt have to win at all. He just needs to NOT get counted out, pinned or submitted for the duration of the match. HBK realizes it, and is going all out trying to get a fall on the Hitman. You can see his desperation.
Shawn in doing so, makes that one major mistake Bret said he would capitalize on before the match, in a bunch of promos and backstage interviews, and locks in the sharpshooter...HBK writhes in pain trying to get free, as the seconds tick away..the HBK fans fall silent and their wind has left their sails, while Bret and his fans are taking over. Bret does the right thing and just holds on for the rest of the way, knowing he has the match due to what the stips entail. 60 Full minutes, if no fall was awarded, it's a draw, thus he retains.
The only odd part about it was the fact they added OT to it, as Gorilla wanted it that way. Because we all recall that Piper made this match while he was the interim GM, and he never stated there would HAVE to be a winner.
I guess returning GM's can do as they please.
So great pacing, great back and forth action, great story told from both guys, and a fantastic match, that sone call boring because they cant get past the first 25 minutes, which is a slow build, and some folk dont get that.
Much better match because they both could do it on their own, without tons of other guys getting involved, and interference everywhere, and a whole other load of sideshow attractions or gimmicks.
Rock/HHH was fun, but fun is it. In fact, the appearance of Taker that night outweighed the main event for the title, which isnt that great a thing, especially for the two guys wrestling in the main event.
