I'm not sure what you mean by you didn't understand the reason for the possession. As in, I'm not sure if you mean why he was possessed to begin with, or why doing what he did cause him to be possessed.
The reason Ocelot was possessed to begin with is the easy part: He had Liquid's arm surgically implanted onto his body (since he lost one of his in MGS1). Liquid lives on through the arm and then starts taking over his mind and body to the point that in MGS4, he is now known as Liquid Ocelot.
Now, how his arm in fact causes the possession is never really explained, but I think I have an idea. I think it had something to do with the whole thing about Liquid being a son of Big Boss (thus he got implanted with the DNA), and when Ocelot took his arm for his own, he reawakened the genes. Also, his "boss" (Solidus Snake) funded the operation, so something tells me Solidus had a hand in what eventually happened, as well (remember what Solidus' goal was with Arsenal Gear and who Liquid Ocelot said he was going after near the end of MGS2).
Again, this is just what I think happened and not what was explained (only the base cause, implanting the arm, and the end result, Liquid's possession, is explained. There were no details)
