Sliiiiiightly off-topic, but I believe note-worthy.

Here in Aus, many people have recently been the victims of an SMS scam.

The common thread to it is that all of these people sent a vote via SMS to a Big Brother competition on TV. Unbeknownst to them, the producers sold a database of their mobile numbers to some yet-to-be-revealed company who then sent unsolicited SMS's out from a 1900 number at a cost to the recipient of $19.95.

The communications ombudsman said there is nothing he can do. The telco's don't want to do anything because they obviously get a cut from this scam.

Just be careful with these SMS voting competitions.
